Default In A Simple Rhyme 1976

In keeping with the release of Greg's book and hearing some of the boots mentioned in it, here's "In A Simple Rhyme" from 1976.

The part @ 3:02 is haunting with Ed hitting the flanger while Dave and Mike harmonize "They'll be times."

    Raw but good stuff!
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I love all the old versions of Rhyme I've heard over the years. They perfected it for WACF, but it was always an absolutely terrific song! I'm so glad I finally got to see them blaze through this one live this summer.

Always been my favorite off of WACF.

It was cool to read that this song was actually written while Mark Stone was still in the band in VHR. I wonder if Mike kept his bass lines or came up with new ones?

Wow. I haven't read the book yet. I knew it was old, guessing around '74, but didn't know it was old enough to have been from the Stone "age".

I'm only half way through the book, but I found it interesting that Mark Stone actually wrote at least 1 song the band performed while he was with them. That would be something to hear.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

does Stone get a credit on WACF? I dont' have the cd in front of me and can't remember if he does or does not....I don't think he does but technically he should....shouldn't he? he was in the band when they wrote the song and probably helped with some of the arrangement.....I have to listen to this version to see how different it is than the WACF version, I haven't heard it in a long time.

IASR was the huge single that never was.

1980, the year of classic radio, why was that song over-looked?

Hearing that one, even the first time, it was a no brainer.
I was amazed how well it was written, it's a masterpiece of melody, lush
harmonies, great lyrics, a jubilant "seat of your pants" solo by Ed, and yes, Swagger!

The "got the interest" hook, is just brilliant, too.

I love the way it ends too, how they bring it down and you hear that fading, stray open string
    accidentally hit.

    Gorgeous.

    Then boom!

    Here comes, Growth!

These guys were like, "We can play pretty, but look out, we're not out of the room, yet."

Nope. the only person outside the band to ever get a songwriting credit on an original VH tune is Michael McDonald on "I'll Wait."

I'm thinking if VH ever does (and they probably never will) put out some sort of career retrospective anthology with old demos and stuff from pre-Warners signing they might have to give Mark Stone some songwriting credits. and of course that means residuals.... which probably won't go over too well with Ed. Ya know he don't like to share that cash money.

Absolutely, this song should have been released as a single back then. Totally agree.

The guy needs to write a book, just like all those early guys from AC/DC that no one remembers!

He could call it THE STONE AGE - My life in & out of Van Halen
