Default Van Halen (the early years) DVD.

I was just remembering that DVD, I have it actually but it is packed away as I am buying my 1st house, at 45 years old. Whoo hoo.
Anyway, there is a guy who was around before Van Halen signed (some here probably know him by name) and he related the event of when Eddie 1st saw Mike and was blown away by his playing. This doesn't jibe with the I showed Mike how to play angle. Why would Eddie want Mike in the band if he had to show him how to play?

I believe the dude was a band member in the band Snake, with Mike.

That quote has always stuck with me because it proves that Ed is full of shit.

I believe Ed asked "does he play guitar"?

If anything, Mike probably showed Ed a thing or two, back in those early days.

Right...like I've said ad nauseam, Eddie wasn't saying he literally showed Mike HOW to play the bass. That would be crazy even by Eddie's standards. Mike could play bass just fine.

He was saying he showed Mike what to play (as in songwriting). Doesn't make it much better, but whatever. Maybe it's been discussed here before already

This could take off like the book series of "An Idiots Guide To..."

Ed shows Mike how to rake leaves

Ed shows Mike how to build your own home studio

As we know Ed is a bit of a control freak...he probably showed Mike exactly what he wanted and what he was hearing in his head and didn't allow Mike to improvise or add his own touch. As we heard in other quotes, "Mike didn't write," Ed did and showed Mike what he wanted. Just my thought...obviously Mike knew how to play.

No, it wasn't just that Eddie said he told Mike how the bass line should go, he said he had to make video lessons to show him what to play! He claimed Mike came over with a video camera (which weren't widely available until the mid-80's, before that he would've been processing film!) and tape what Eddie was doing! Is anyone buying this? And since so many of the bass lines consisted of 8th notes on the root note of power chords, this is more insulting than ever!

That's a GREAT DVD, in my opinion. The guy is the guitarist of Mike's band Snake. He says Mike said, "These guys want me to play for them," and played him the early demo of "Take Your Whiskey Home," and he was "blown away!"
