Default 1:07 of classic VH brilliance given short-shrift

    The tune is "1984".

It's a fucking amazing piece of EVH instrumental brilliance, one of his most beautiful pieces of work, period. The chords, the tones, the structure, the accents -- it is over the top.

To me, it's always been "1984/Jump" -- they're a pairing just like "Eruption/You Really Got Me". I don't like separating the two. I wish radio would add "1984" as an introduction to "Jump". More so, I wish the band would roll a pre-recorded version of "1984" before "Jump" and just soak it up. "1984" is as much a part of "Jump" -- for me -- as is Ed's intro to "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love". Just going to "Jump" is like starting ATBL where the drums kick in.

Honestly, if I can time it right, I'd like "1984" to be one of the last things I ever hear.

"he's a guitar hero man, nobody wants to hear him play keyboards"

    lol, just kidding.

I haven't listened to that tune in awhile but I have always thought that Ed was a great, great piano-keyboard player. I know it gets heat but the piano on a tune like Not Enough is just a beautiful piece of music all by itself.

to me, Ed is probably the most gifted pure musician I've ever seen.

I wish VH would ad led 1984 to the tour set lists. It was epic and well-received when 1984 was played before Jump on the '07-'08 tour.

Whoever edited "1984" down from the original 45 minutes to 1:07 also deserves a ton of credit.

I agree the editing job was phenomenal.

However, they could have shaved just one more minute off the recorded track, imo.

My huge bet is on Donn Landee having done it. I doubt Ted did. At that point, I doubt Ed would've given Ted that much control.

    I completely agree!
The space aged timbre of 1984 was the perfect intro to the album, and also pairs beautifully with the synth vibe of Jump. To me, it's also a gorgeous piece of music , which sets an uplifting tone for the record.

I'd LOVE to hear the rumored 45 minutes of noodling that it was edited down from!!!

Gotta love that legendary statement by Dave, yet I (and millions of others) will disagree with him about Ed's piano/keyboard excursions. He's a gifted writer on whatever instrument he uses IMO. Eddie himself claimed that no matter what he writes on, the music still has his fingerprint on it (pun intended), and sounds like Van Halen.

    I agree!

    Again, agreed.
The original 45 minute piece was recorded right after the 5150 studio was built. I'm guessing that Ed & Donn spent a LOT of time in there, getting used to the feel/vibe and sound of the place. Donn would've likely been there for this instrumental noodling and he had ears like Edward, as far as getting the sounds on tape.

Ted most likely didn't even want the studio to be built in the first place, and I seriously doubt he had a hand in sifting through 45 minutes of keyboard dissonance, in order to edit the piece that became "1984."

I only have a minute to say anything, I can say so much more about it.

But, I love it. It's a brilliant piece of music.

would love to hear the longer version.

Kevin, you inspired me to throw my "1984" CD in the car this morning and blast it on my way to work. The whole album sort of gets the "short-shrift" from the hardcore fan base because we've all heard "Jump", "Panama" and "Hot For Teacher" thousands of times. I love this album, and I always will.
