Default Would you rather see the 5150 tour or the current one?

As a diehard Roth-tard (a term i embrace completely), this question still poses
    conflict.

5150, circa 1986, you still get a young (ish) Edward, with remnants of the brown sound
and his slippery, off the cuff approach to high octane noodling.

You also get a younger Al, an absolute drunken beast of a powerhouse, still very
much at the top of his game.

Plus, you get Michael & his angelic harmonies.

    But then there's Sammy....

In 2015 you get a much older Ed & Al, with newer tones, and razor sharp/on the money chops,
though much less spontaneous and improvisational.

You get an absolute stellar set-list.

And you get Dave, the original singer.

This is tough because i absolutely adore the Eddie of the late 70's to mid 80's.

Because of that, i might choose the 5150 tour.

As a die-hard Van Halen fan, I too, am conflicted.

On the (now not so) current tour, you get a band that's firing on all cylinders, a rejuvenated EVH, arguably the best set-list they've played and you're able to see an absolute beast on bass. I'd mention they're are an incredible band with a really bad singer right now, but a certain someone bruises easily and would accuse me of coming in here to shit on the band.

Because of that, I'd choose to see this tour... because some Van Halen is better than no Van Halen, no matter who the singer is.

I'd just like to see them. In 1986 I was 12 going on 13 and 5150 was my first VH album. But in the 30 years since, the only 2 times they toured Australia (1998 and 2012), I wasn't in Aust. So I've still never seen them live. I'll take whatever I can get.

5150 buries the current tour. They had chemistry, they were smiling, they were great friends and no fakery.
I don't care about bad feedback here....I'm telling it like it is.
There's been no chemistry at all since the '95 tour.
All tours since then have either had a muppet out the front, or a clown fronting a backing band, and the 2004 tour was a "screw up" cause someone was drunk and always falling on his arse. Fact.

hard to beat a younger, prime Van Halen no matter who is holding the mic.

1986 there was slight fakery.. over the top friendship...but it was shiny and new. happy yes.

1992/93 was last tour w chemistry w Sam. '95 seemed no good to me

2015 Ed and Dave have shown some chemistry though, plus Ed and Wolf

Lol, since today's setlist BURIES the 5150 set, especially from a drumming point of view. Alex may have been young and wild, but I think the booze was taking it's toll, because he was not all over the kit as much as he had been in previous tours. Maybe it was just the songs, but I wasn't as impressed with his playing on that tour. Newly sober, he was much better on the OU812 and FUCK tours, IMO.

Watching him on this tour, he easily outplays the Alex on LWAN. And like Don't Disturb My Paradise, I don't care about negative feedback, it's just my opinion as a drummer and as a huge fan of Al's.

Current one. I was sceptical about so called "reunion", but after watching show from current tour changed my mind. Wolfgang stage presence improved soo much...Dave sings OK for his standard. Eddie is still stellar. And setlist SETLIST...Now, after hearing concert version of In A Simple Rhyme I may die happy...

Though if I had to choose ONE VH tour, I'd chose tour with Cherone on vocals, bc he was only singer willing to sing other singers songs...

I didn't see the 5150 tour (besides LWAN on VHS) so I would choose that.
My first VH show was the OU812 show in Hartford back in '88.

Current. Still pissed off about how they went about the 5150 tour set list and Sammy holding up the "David Lee Who?" signs. With such a great history that was just the wrong way to move forward.
    Right here I say....

Interesting you said that about the '95 tour. That's the only time I've left after a VH show feeing let down. Too many pop songs in the set list. I mean opening with Right Now is a horrible idea IMO.

Considering I don't like Van Hagar , the current one. I saw the 5150 tour as I was a VH die hard. I was disappointed and for me, like many other fans, it was over. As far as chemistry and fakery, we know now the entire 5150 PR campaign was based on fakery.

2015 was a great tour. They kicked ass from start to finish and even won over a lot of Dave bashers. They've renewed my optimism enough to continue saying they'll do one more album and tour, and then adios.

Tough call. The 5150 tour had Mike. This last tour had a set list that I liked a lot better than the 5150 tour.
