    Default fantasy concert

No doubt promoters have offered untold dollars through the years for a VH tour representing "both worlds," and if it hasn't happened yet, it probably won't, but this exemplary tour for the DLR era winds down, I find myself fantasizing about the structure and setlist for a tour featuring both Dave and Sammy. Here is my stab at a setlist for a show that will probably only occur in our imaginations. Feel free to suggest your own structures and setlists for this fantasy concert!

    1. Light Up The Sky
    2. Beautiful Girls
    3. Hot for Teacher
    4. Seventh Seal
    5. Why Can't This Be Love
    6. Right Now
    7. And The Cradle Will Rock
    8. Ain't Talkin Bout Love
    9. Panama
    10. Poundcake
    11. Runaround
    12. Black And Blue
    13. Drum Solo
    14. Everybody Wants Some
    15. Mean Streets
    16. Dance The Night Away

I would reverse the encore with Jump fading into Top of the World.

If this ever happened, which it obviously won't, I'd rather both singers come out to start. Then one does a set, then the other, then both.
Really, just no way it'd ever happen, unless Sam stepped back to play rhythm guitar or something while Dave was fronting.

Only possible (and still impossible) way would be during some sort of one-off event. Live Aid or something like that.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

This summer's setlist already closely resembles a dream concert. Just need to find a way to get Loss Of Control and Fools into the set...

Interesting idea... A joint tour with both "main" singers of Van Halen? Why didn't I think of, or try championing, that? LOL.
If it ever happens (hope springs eternal...), then both eras will most likely be represented by the hits. That means Pretty Woman, Dancing in the Streets, Jump (rightfully so!), Why Can't This Be Love (again, rightfully so!), etc.

I'm totally game for it, because I don't have any bias towards which Van Halen music I like and have fond memories of - it all rocks!!!

Having said that? Certain songs I feel need to be played:
ATBL, SGMAD, DTNA, EWS, RD, MS, Unchained, HAIL, Panama, HFT, GGB, Summer Nights, 5150, Cabo Wabo, WIL, FWYS, Poundcake, Right Now, Top of the World, CSLY, Don't Tell Me, Amsterdam, Tattoo.

Are there other GREAT songs/deep cuts/worthy material from both eras? Of course!!!
Yet, there's only so much time in a concert situation.

...here's some thoughts I had in a similar thread just a little over a year ago (The hypothetical Sam and Dave tour):

Eschewing the "first half one/second half the other singer" format, I broke the night up into revolving mini-sets:

(House lights go down to a pre-recorded "1984")

    1. Good Enough
    2. Romeo Delight
    3. Unchained
    4. Hear About It Later
    5. Summer Nights
    6. Runaround
    7. 5150
    8. Hang 'em High
    9. D.O.A.
    10. I'm the One
    11. Drop Dead Legs

...which rides an extended solo out to Ed and Al's combination solos, featuring:

    Eruption / Cathedral / 316 / *Neworld / Spanish Fly / Pleasure Dome / Mean Street intro

...which comes out into the loose opening of

    12. Girl Gone Bad
    13. Humans Being
    14. Crossing Over
    15. Cabo Wabo
    16. As Is
    17. Stay Frosty

At this point, a smaller jazz kit, a keyboard, and an acoustic guitar are brought out and the boys go "semi-unplugged" at center stage for the next 5 songs:

    18. Could This Be Magic?
    19. Secrets
    20. Take Me Back (Deja Vu)
    21. Feels So Good
    22. Not Enough

    23. Jump...straight into...Top of the World

    ENCORE:

    24. Right Now
    25. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love (BOTH Dave and Sam on stage)

(House lights come up to an extended re-recording of "Growth")

I still think that does a pretty decent job of covering the hits and deep cuts of both Sam and Dave, as well as any sort of voice fatigue either one might experience over the course of the night/tour.

As far as incorporating Wolf and Gary into the festivities, I REALLY like the idea of bringing along Tremonti and Extreme for full sets and making a festival of it. Start the first weekend in May and run through the end of September. Even if VH just does a Saturday or Sunday once a week, that gives them roughly 24 dates, which would cover most major US cities within a 4-hour drive for most fans.

On top of that, both Tremonti and Extreme could do fill-in dates during the week at the club/theatre level if they wanted.

Added bonuses could include both bands covering VH songs as well as any and all cameos sprinkled throughout the night.

The only REAL negative (outside of the individuals' egos involved) is that the sheer cost of putting on this sort of show only ONCE a week throughout the summer would pretty much keep it from ever happening...

...and here are some thoughts I had from another similar thread (VH: if you do tour next year...) from December of '14:

Back to back nights...then 3-4 nights off before the next city
    One night for each singer
If they have to, play "smaller" arenas - 8-10k seats, guaranteeing and/or easing the pressure to "sell out" each night
Discounted ticket packages for both nights

...obviously, there is PLENTY of material for EACH night to run 1:45-2 hours per night. This would also lessen any vocal fatigue either singer may experience during the tour. Fans would have to option of seeing their favorite singer (either night's show) or their favorite band (both nights).

The only downside to this would be the extra couple of days of down-time on the road, which would add to the costs of the tour. But a 10-month tour would still hit almost 60 cities just playing two cities every 8-9 days, and it certainly wouldn't feel as rigorous of a "tour" for these guys, who average age is now pushing 60.

If U2 can do it for their 2015 tour and Zeppelin has tossed around the idea IF they ever toured again, why can't the mighty VH?

Would love to hear both of those!

Both of those tunes just have so much attitude.
Actually, WACF & FW are both loaded with attitude.
