I know, i just saw this on Yahoo!

    Every week, man.
It's like these insane, disgruntled people do copycats of other shootings,
simply to make some sort of mark (or stain) on society.
They know the media will latch onto it & run with it, and the criminal will be
    all over the news.

On all levels, this country is an absolute mess.

Wonder who the first big time politician to utter the phrase "now is not the time to talk about gun laws" will be.

politicians on both side will try to make this an issue that helps them. I wish it was as easy as changing gun laws. It's not.

    Dumb question...

Are the guns being fired illegal / unregistered guns? There seems to be weekly issues with shootings. If they were illegal weapons - then someone needs to figure where they're coming from. I think the NRA would want to be part of that - meaning, if they stem the flow of illegal weapons - it would improve their profile with the larger community.

Beyond that - tragic. Absolutely tragic. I don't understand why the US seems to have so many problems in this regard.
Winners come and go; legends are forever.

And here's your answer, if we didn't know already:

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest reacted to the news that there was a college shooting by promoting the administration’s support of gun control.

Well, I would prefer people know exactly what happened before they start trying to call for legislation.

It would be a hell of a coincidence if someone just decided to troll on 4chan--which I understand is not unheard of--and pinpointed the general geographic area and the day. But what if the gun was illegal and traced to cartels? Is that a gun conversation or prohibition conversation? What if it is terrorism? What if it actually is the "beta male" stuff?

But the media is running with this 4chan/beta male thing anyway. Thing is that speculation is really easy and not necessarily helpful. An example: Umpqua CC was big on military veterans, it recently opened a Veterans Student Center, and Alek Skarlatos (one of the military men who thwarted that terrorist attack on a train) went to school at Umpqua. So it's obviously Islamic terrorism, tit for tat.

We should find out what happened, make sure next of kin has been notified, make sure we know who and a decent reason why he did what he did, and then have your policy discussions. Either way, legislation in the wake of a tragic incident is usually not a good idea. See: Patriot Act.

    True.
But as the Washington Post is reporting, there have been 247 mass shootings (of varying size) in the US this year. With this being the 274th day of the year, it would appear any debate over this problem is going to have to come after a tragic event.

In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.

It depends upon how you want to define 'mass shooting.' There are all kinds of different numbers. Some count any shooting where three or more are shot, for example. A professor at Northeastern University who studies mass shootings uses the FBI definition, which is where four or more people die in the shooting. Still others think that is too broad, as that includes family disputes (think a dad who kills his wife and three kids in their home) and shootings that occur as part of another crime (like a robbery or drug deal gone bad).

Whereas what laymen think as a 'mass shooting' is a random event where someone shows up somewhere and starts spraying bullets and many people die.

When it comes to school shootings there is a similar dispute. For example, Mother Jones keeps a tally and they count many questionable shootings. Example: a shooting that was a result of a nighttime, non-school related altercation where the person ran away and was shot, but ended up dying on school grounds. They also don't count multiple shooters, but then inexplicably count Columbine.

This may seem like a distinction without a difference, but if we want to address a 'problem,' that problem needs to be defined. Since we know very little about this particular shooting, we don't really know what 'problem' we are addressing.

The thing about the type of mass shootings most people think of when they think of 'mass shootings' is that they are the types of crimes we will be least effective in trying to stop. The vast majority of firearm deaths are a result of regular old gun crime. If we want to look to save lives, that's where we have to look. And considering there is so much violence associated with the prohibition of drugs, that's a place where we could reassess policy and save a lot of lives.

The only way to stop random shooters whom we cannot predict when they are going to 'blow' would be to just basically eliminate guns. But there are so many on the streets already that it wouldn't make much of a difference. But where we WOULD have a problem is that it would shift the entire market to the black market, which would likely be run by the drug cartels and, on our streets, gangs as subsidiaries of them. And if we legalized drugs and eliminated the cartels, new mafioso groups would arise as part of the illicit gun trade.

NY Times reported that one of the witnesses claimed the 20 year-old shooter asked victims to state their religion before he shot. Still early and waiting on more details to emerge. If that is indeed what happened, there will be another political angle to deal with.

That social media warning was met with some encouraging and supportive responses from other fucked up individuals. Sick.

The so called "Egg Man" or person who 4chan and other listed as the Oregon shooter is NOT him. He is alive and has communicated to NBC.
