Talking "VAN HALEN RISING" CHAT WITH AUTHOR GREG RENOFF - Discussion Archive

    Hi all,

Our chat with Van Halen Rising author Greg Renoff (VHLinks username "ffoner") starts at 6 PM Pacific TONIGHT! You can start posting your questions to Greg now! That will get us started and he'll have some he can answer right off the bat.

The chat will last 60 minutes. Please don't post your same question over and over, give Greg a chance to answer the ones he can. And look to see (if you can) if the same question has already been asked or if Greg has answered it. Please be polite and respect Greg's time. Questions should be about Greg's book or the interviews he did for it, etc. We're not going to ask Greg his opinion on Sam vs. Dave. This is a book discussion. And if you haven't gotten this book, you need to!!! It is a must for all Van Halen fans.

We will be giving away two signed copies of Greg's amazing book randomly. If you win, you'll get a private message from me. So PLEASE check your private messages.

Ok that's it, enjoy tonight's chat!! Greg will answer the questions inside this thread, there isn't a separate page to go to, this is it.

First off, thank you for writing and publishing such a great Van Halen historical work.

Of all the important people in VH’s history you interviewed, did anyone say certain topics were off limits?

Also, did you ask additional questions in any of your interviews outside the scope of this book’s subject to possibly use for another future VH historical project? Maybe another book in the works?

    Thank you!

Greg, thanks for writing the book! Did you find anyone having different recollections about the same thing? For instance, did Mikey remember something differently than everyone else did? ~Dave

Maybe a little off the wall, but did Pewsey have any regrets about leaving the band as keyboard player after witnessing the Dave/Eddie penis nose gag? I know that he was probably on his way out anyway, but did he have any regrets leaving after seeing the success that Van Halen would continue to and later achieve?

Thanks for researching and writing it. I'll be grabbing a copy as soon as the Kindle version becomes available. I don't think something like this has been done for any band so you've really broken new ground. In writing the book, were you surprised at just how much ground there was to cover regarding the early days?

    Hi, Greg!
Many thanks for your research and dedication to finishing the book for us fans. I'd seriously shake your hand and buy you a beer, if I could...

Through all your contacts from the very earliest days of the band, did you ever hear of never-before-seen video of them, from those days?

    Hi Smithtone -
    1. No one said any topic was off limits. However, some ppl did ask thing they told me stay "off the record."
    2. Post 78 topics/stories did come up, but I didn't pursue them aggressively.

    Hi Greg,

After all of your research and interviews, what would you say is the most surprising thing you learned about Van Halen (the band as a whole or an individual member if that's the case)

Can't wait to read the book

That's always a challenge - but what i tried to do is, for instance, when researching key shows like VH's 1974 Pasadena City Hall gig that were a LONG time ago, I just tried to talk to as many ppl as I could and see where things matched up. That's a good starting point for getting things nailed down accurately.

One more ? from me Greg, and again thank you for all of your hard work in getting this book out! Other than the fact that Ed Al, Dave, Mike and Mark Stone were all extremely talented and very capable musicians, how in the world were they able to come up with great original material when they had to maintain such an extensive catalogue of cover songs to play for their club gigs? It would seem that even though Eddie could hear something once and play it note for note, the amount of cover material that they had to play and practice would leave little time to come up with any originals. Is the simple answer (probably) that they were just simply that good and didn't need to practice the covers more than a few times before having them mastered and good to go for performing at gigs?

I think both he and MS do have regrets. The thing he said to me is that he thinks about all of the rock casualties from drugs and booze and from that standpoint, can live with what happened. But TBH, I don't think any keyboard player would have lasted in VH. Eddie didn't like anyone competing.

    Hi Greg,

Can't wait to read this! Were you able to get any sense of whether or not Eddie hung out much with his peers in the club scene? By that I mean I know people like George Lynch, etc. saw him in clubs, but did they seem to ever hang out and trade notes/socialize?
