My cousin and his wife are there, and he said the same thing. Of course, without "official numbers" released, it's impossible to tell if this tour has been a success or an epic failure...

    Neat.

    I'm thinking that sounds familiar...

Just got back from the show at 1:30am. A quick review:

I'm a lifelong, hardcore fan, but this was only my second VH show ever (after 2012), as I grew up in New Zealand. I took my daughters, 18 and 13, for their first ever rock concert. On the way to Hollywood (with a soundtrack of VHII and TDL) we made a little pilgrimage, stopping by 1881 Las Lunas St, Pasadena, where Eddie and Alex grew up.

I've gotta say, getting to the Bowl was a nightmare. I thought I was smart driving to the Ventura Blvd lots to catch the shuttle, but when we got there the lots were all full. Drove around Hollywood for 40 minutes looking for a place to park, and found nothing. Eventually I drove back to the closed lots, where the attendant took pity on us, let us in, and found us a spot. We ended up getting into the bowl just 10 minutes before VH came on. I'm bummed that I missed KWS.

The show itself...fantastic. Most of you have already seen them by now, so I won't tell you what you already know. Eddie was damn near perfect, like always, as were Alex and Wolf. The big question: what kind of night did Dave have? To my ears, Dave was in incredible form. I noticed maybe one off note the whole night. (I know, when you're there live you tend to miss the bad notes.) No IASR or CT, again. We got the extended DTNA with dance lessons, and ICM with the Gazzarri's alley story. And Dave repeated his heartfelt words about playing with Ed being the greatest moments of his life; they shared a hug. Brought tears to my eyes.

The crowd: packed house. We had cheap seats toward the back (pretty costly buying three at $80 each). Just about everybody in our section stood through the show; the entire sections on either side of us sat through most of it. (How can anybody do that?) I noticed that the songs I most wanted to hear (e.g. LUTS, DM) tended to be the ones that people sat down for. Helps me to appreciate the difficult balancing act Wolf has in designed a setlist to please both casual and hardcore fans. The songs I most enjoyed were a bit of a surprise: I got the biggest kick out of seeing 20,000 fans going nuts to HFT, YRGM, ATBL. DDL was the best-received of the deep cuts. My 18 year-old like Beautiful Girls best, the 13 year-old liked Jump.

I would swear that they were recording this show. Dave put in a total effort from beginning to end: singing all the lyrics close to the album versions, constant energy (lots of splits, kicks over his head), no lazy shortcuts. (I listened carefully to him on Panama and Jump, as I don't think he's sounded too good on those closing songs on this tour. But he was hitting all his notes really well tonight, even at the close.) I think he also swore less. Ed's solo also seemed to have some extra spit and polish than usual: he started out in a posed position at center stage, and Al and Wolf provided accompaniment to the Eruption parts according to the album version. (I don't think they've done that previously on the tour??) Ed's solo was a bit sloppy in places, I thought, relative to his recent standards, but also a bit more creative. They also went through the pretense of ending the show after Panama, before breaking out Jump.

I listened to the crowd on the way out of the bowl. Everybody seemed delighted with the show. I heard a few people talking about how fantastic Dave was. That makes me really happy. There can be no Van Halen without Dave. I don't care how old they are, this band is happy, harmonious, and on fire. I believe we're going to get at least one more studio album.
