Haven't you heard, the tour isn't selling well.

Will Phoenix be able to rise from the ashes after the Mighty Van Halen burns it down tonight?

I'll be at the back of section 101. At my hotel now, just thinking about getting the shuttle over in a little while. I'll be there on my ownsome, seeing as it would have been hard to convince anyone else to fly all the way from Ireland!

Just back to my hotel. Enjoyed the show a lot. I only have the terrible New Jersey 2007 show to compare it to, but this was infinitely better. If I get time, I'll post more, but one thing: DLR's joke about not wanting to "save the world, just 30 or 40 major markets" made me laugh my ass off, but it seemed to fall flat for everyone else. Anyway, I can now say I've see the Mighty Van Halen when they were actually pretty mighty.

I don’t write much here for some reason, but since no one else is talking about last night’s show, I thought I’d chime in. This was the second show that I saw on this tour, I saw them in Concord, CA in July, but I think this may have been a better show in some respects.

The obvious is that the band is really tight, the setlist is great, and the playing is excellent. There was more interaction with Dave and Ed than the July show, Ed even took a few slides across Dave's dance floor. Ed really energetic last night. Really, the three Van Halens are as good as it gets, the only question mark is Dave. I thought Dave was better in July, there was less story-time with Dave and he was a little more consistent. But, ultimately, Dave is Dave and he was having a good time. I do blame Dave for the one uncomfortable element in the show: there was no A/C to mess with like 2012, but they shut the fans off during the show and an outdoor concert during the summer in Phoenix needs air to circulate.

Like many of you, I am sick of some of the overplayed elements of the set, but dammit, when you are sitting there with 15,000 other sweaty people and Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love hits you at 110db and everyone is screaming/singing along, it is a glorious thing.

    Just coming to now....
First off sound check kicked ass.
LUTS, RWD, DDL, IW & another I just can't remember right this sec.
Maybe 75 or so VIP folks total? Not sure...might have been 150?
I wasn't paying too much attention to how many other folks were there at that moment.
Just digging seeing Ed, Al & Wolf tear thru part of the set with perfection from literally as close as you could get to the stage leaning on the barrier & dead center.
Ed's interaction with the crowd was fairly minimal, but first off it was hot as balls -like 104 degrees-
People screaming shit at him couldn't quite understand he had ear plugs in. But Ed was very cool waved, smiled and played his stuff perfectly of course.
The VIP staff could have been better organized to be honest. Check in was fine & the little pre-entry meeting of no pix during sound check was fine...
But then once in Mavis felt compelled to have security stop everyone from going down to sound check to reiterate the no pix issue. So I feel she owes me like 90 bux or so for missing that little extra bit of sound check.
Not much I can say here that hasn't already been reported from other shows but I will say this:
If they come to your town (which is only you now Cally) and you have never been, you need to find a way to go.
If you are a fan & don't think you can afford it, you need to find a way to go.
If you "used to like them" but got angry because of all the politics & BS, you need to put that shit aside & find a way to go.
Dave will ALWAYS be Dave. That will never change & love him or hate him he is a true original that has lived 10 lifetimes compared to anyone reading this post.
Al & Wolf are great. No complaints of any kind. Top notch musicians & Al's dedication to backing his brother play over the years right or wrong has been the gold standard for what many of us would like in a brother.
Ed though is the Alpha & Omega of this entire regime.
Not sure exactly how many different folks visit this site or how many exact members there are but you can bet every last one of you will be genuinely bummed, hurt & perhaps even shed a legit tear the day Eddie Van Halen dies. I know I will. So as I have said before, this is ALL going to end sooner than later. The chance to see Ed with a version of the band Van Halen play these classic songs could all end forever after this tour.
I'm sure Wolf has a bunch of personal shit he'd like to do in the music world & Ed will probably be involved in that to some degree & with "no base player" until Wolf is available & with Dave finishing his master's in Yakuza tattoos or dog herding competitions who knows how long if ever before this chance comes back around.
JHC...what a rant....I'm still so dehydrated from beverages, sweating & singing my ass off I'm fading here.
Anyway......the bottom line at the end of the day is this:
Ed is one of the best guitar players to ever walk the earth and his playing last night was un-fucking believable.
100% worth the price of admission by itself. So don't cheap out. Don't lie to yourself & say you'll catch them next time.
Find a way to go. You won't regret it.

    C.
