    Default Ed's other influence?

I was watching the new "Inside Metal" series, which is based on the California
hard rock & metal scene, and disc two has an extensive discussion about
the club days of Eddie Van Halen & Randy Rhoads.

This band, Stormer, kept coming up in the discussion, with two guys
claiming Jimmy Bates (Stormer's guitarist) was Edward's favorite guitar
    player on the club scene.

Listening to the live improv in this club, with a lengthy solo, i can totally
hear a lot of early EVH style runs & effects.
He even does the "On Fire" run, at one point (or something quite similar).

what year is that from? doesn't say on YT. if it's pre 75/76-ish then maybe a case can be made...

I think ultimately no matter how much EVH may have been influenced by others, no one else has really played with the same kind of attack and 'swagger' if that's the right word as he did. def a guitarist/musician who's more than the sum of their influences

Sounds like a band who could have made it if David Lee Roth had joined them instead of VH.

Blah...Sounds pretty bland to me. Sure, the guy can shred, but that's about it. Tons of guys can shred. No lead fills or really any creativity in until he's left to do whatever he wants in the solo...It kinda sounds like typical 70s rock to me. Just my opinion.

This was 76 or 77, according to another source.

Apparently, this guy was the local hot-shot on the scene, but then packed it up
ala Vito Bratta & never played again.

His riffing sounds more straight up, early Rainbow, but his soloing approach
has a ton of Eddie's early trademarks.
I heard the ending Ice cream man cadenza, a portion of it at least, some I'm the
one, On fire, a more primitive cathedral-esque volume swell idea.
Plus he has that slight phase happening with his sound.

This guy lacks Ed's later (FW, DD, 1984) slippery approach, he lacks his sense of swing,
but i do hear a major influence on the technical end.

    I dunno....

Just never heard of this guy or band until i watched the DVD, then i checked it out
    via youtube.

I could hear a bit of borrowing, if this guy was indeed first.

    Who knows for sure?

Pretty sure this guy wasn't first as I remember Stormer being an opening act for VH On some of the old club days gigs posters for VH that I've seen pictures of.

I don't play guitar but that guy sounded pretty damn good to me, if this was around 75ish I could see him having some influence on Ed.

    I've always said:

Early EVH was like Billy Gibbons on steroids.

I remember, even as kids in Junior High & High School, talking about how
much ZZ Top was embedded in Ed's more straight-forward licks & phrasing.

Then another guy thought the riff to "Heard it on the X" was the seed for the Mean
    Street riff.

I'm still not seeing the telltale donor or premium member logos, next to some of the so-called "hardcore" fans, here on the Links....
I know it's not mandatory, but it still makes me mad!
