Default Loudwire Top 50 Hard Rock + Metal Bassists

Thought this list was worth a look.
    Michael Anthony scores a spot.
“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

    Nikki Sixx ahead of Mike?

Lemmy...in the top 10 but not John Paul Jones?

    Yeah...another lame list.

Pretty sure Jack Bruce would have been horrified if he knew he was in a hard rock / metal bassist list.

I'd be more interested in seeing a list of best rhythm sections rather than just bass players. Mikey and Al would almost certainly be in the top 10, although I think Cliff Williams / Phil Rudd / Malcolm Young from AC-DC are about the tightest I've heard.

Sorry but Nikki should be ahead of Mike. Its not about chops...well at least I don't think so however he is more well known, writes his own material and has a presence that trumps Mike. Not a dig on Mike but he is one of the few bass players that is more well known than his accompying guitarist.

However some of the guys on this list.......ehhhhh

Before I even looked at the bassist list I noticed the guitarist and drummer lists were already there. I clicked the drummer list and within just the first 5 spots (counting up) saw they had Lars Ulrich ahead of Ian Paice.

    I'm done.

Even Lars himself would laugh at that.

I agree with you on this. And yeah, not a slam on Mike.
Where Eddie is the creative genius in VH, Nikki plays the same role in the Crue.

Doug Pinnick at 45 is a fucking joke. Dude should be a top 5 in every bassist/vocalist/musician in general list.

The biggest problem with ranking musicians like this is not only the obvious and biggest problem that music is subjective, but that they never even try to specify what the criteria is. "Top" doesn't mean much. They always end up being some random hybrid of most popular, most talented/skilled, most visible (style of music and overall band popularity), and most influential, with no real explanation or weighing system.

But I guess we're still talking about it anyway so that must be the point.
