Default Muslim Parent Warns School Board Were Going to Be the Majority Soon

The Jersey City Board of Education voted last week not to close schools for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, one of the most important holidays for Muslims.

School board members in New Jersey made their decision Thursday despite appeals from Muslim attendees who showed up to advocate that the board change the school schedule.

At one point, things became so heated that an official urged security to take charge of the situation. At least one person was seen on video being escorted from the meeting.

We feel alienated from the Board of Education, we feel alienated from this system, Omar Abouelkhair told WNBC-TV.

Were going to be the majority soon, another said.

But board member Gerald Lyons suggested there is a perfectly valid reason for having school on Thursday, telling residents that closing school with just six days notice would cause undue hardship for 5,000 to 10,000 parents who might not have anywhere else to send their kids.

Lyons also reminded that students can still take the day off as an excused religious absence, meaning they would not face a penalty for doing so. Others noted that the school does not let out for the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The controversy came in the first year that schools in New York City will not have classes Thursday, the result of a decision made by Mayor Bill de Blasio last March, WNBC reported.

New York did the same thing. I don't understand why. If schools are mostly Muslim then the other kids will just be in class and not much will get covered that day. There is no reason, in my opinion, to actually close the schools and they set a dangerous precedent my doing this. But when you close schools (like NYC does) for Jewish holidays then it's really hard to avoid closing them for Muslim holidays when there's more Muslims in the schools than Jewish students.

This happened last year in Maryland, and it caused the district to drop all religious holidays. Though that really isn't true in practice, as the same days are holidays, they just don't technically say that they are holidays for religious observance. It was in response to Muslims asking for the same holiday in question here.

I would say that just simply keeping the same 'religious' holidays and just pretending they are just random days off is a tad bit disingenuous. But the reason Christmas is a holiday for public schools in this country and Yom Kippur in many public schools is because attendance would be too light on those days to justify opening the school. Unfortunately for Muslims in most areas, they are too much of a minority to make a difference if they all stay home from school on Eid al-Adha, hence the 'we'll be a majority soon' comment.

This will be an interesting fight if it ever goes to court, because whether you call it 'Winter break' or 'Christmas break,' the break exists because of the Christian holiday, not because it is winter. And if one religion gets a holiday, why shouldn't the others? I suppose the simple answer is what has happened in most of the country, which is to remove any religious references from the current holiday/break schedules at schools. But that's just a thinly veiled 'fix' that keeps the Christian and Jewish holidays and excludes Muslims.

It doesn't get much more 'unequal' than these religions get days off for their kids, but these religions don't and must miss a day's school work in order to observe their religious holiday.

So if people are going to be forced to pay in to the public school system and to go to public schools unless they want to pay extra, then this will butt right up against the first amendment, with Muslim families' tax money funding schools that give preference to other religions.

Yet another issue that school choice would likely fix.

I don't have a problem with the local schools adjusting their schedules to best suit their population. I think the school has a valid reason to not cancel school this year, but it should be on next year's calendar.

On a side note, my wife is a Catholic School teacher and I swear those kids get more days off than I ever did. Besides summer break, they get a fall break (a full week!), Christmas break (two weeks), Spring break, Easter Break, plus all kinds of half days.

Just doing some back of the napkin calculations here:

    365 days

    - weekends (104)
    - summer break (50)
    - fall break (5)
    - winter break (10, depending on how the holidays fall)
    - spring break (5)
    - easter break (3)
    - other holidays (3, Memorial, Presidents, and Labor)
    - Random half days (I'll say it amount to 2 full days, but that's probably giving them the benefit of the doubt)
    - other Random "in-service" days, usually around parent teacher conferences (2)
    - Snow days (don't laugh, they average about 3 a year)

In total, if I'm not forgetting anything else, that leaves about 180 days.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Default Muslim Parent Warns School Board Were Going to Be the Majority Soon

I missed school every year for Yom Kippur and I do at work every year too (today actually). These assholes need to stfu and just take a sick day like all Jews have always had to. BFD stop whining. It was never a big deal. These people my god.

It is interesting here now where I live kids get off for Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, they call it in-service days or something. But that's very new. My daughter is off today, but she'd be home either way. My family has never taken off work or school for Rosh Hashannah only Yom Kippur, which is the most important Jewish holiday bar none.

Districts with large Jewish populations do take those holidays off.

This is one of those things I think will be an issue. Why does one religion get days off from publicly funded schools, but not any others, in a country that is supposed to be basically religiously neutral? While most people will just take it, someone will come along and ask the question why their kid has to make up work for an important religious holiday while Christians get two weeks off for Christmas.

It didn't affect my life as a student one bit Love. Some teachers knew kids would be off that day and tailored their lesson plans accordingly, and some didn't. It's one fucking day it's not a big deal. It never was.

I took it off every year even in college. It's just not an issue.

I'm telling you as someone who has spent his whole life having to do this. It's a mountain out of a mole hill. You're not making up a year of work it's one day, BFD. I don't recall being tortured in my scholastic life by missing one day of school. Our world revolves around the Christian calendar. Accept it because it's fine. As a Jew I have no issue with any of it and never have. What are we supposed to do, have a billon days off for every religion? We have to go by something as a general standard and most people are Christian here.

And I'm pretty sure the Muslims don't mind getting two weeks off for Christmas vacation. They gladly take it and enjoy it like the rest of us non-Christians did.

I always hated doing makeup work because that meant extra work for a night or over the weekend. And I am sure good teachers adjust accordingly if there is a significant population.

I am getting more at the substitution game, though. If Christians had to attend school on Christmas Day but got Yom Kippur and Eid al-Adha off, I am guessing they'd have issue with it.

Yes, this country was founded on those values, and the biggest population is of Christians of some denomination. But in publicly funded schools, if religious minorities make some noise, this could be an issue.

That's really all I am getting at. I could see some loud religious minorities start demanding this and I don't know that I disagree with them. Of COURSE everyone loves time off, but that isn't necessarily the point.

I don't remember spending one extra night or weekend doing school work because I missed one day because of Yom Kippur.

Again I lived in a Jewish area so lots of my friends were off so maybe teachers planned for it who knows. In fact I had a Jewish teacher once and she took it off too. Nobody made a big deal about every little stupid thing like this in the 70s and 80s. And to me this is stupid. Take the day off and stop making it more than what it is (obviously talking to the people complaining not you Love). Everything can't be catered to.

Brett, I think the issue is that once a school board starts closing for other religious holidays that it opens up the request to all. I don't blame them for asking but the answer should be no.

If it's a big deal to take off for Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur then just go back to the way it was. Hell not like I got a free day off from work today.
