Default Is this the earliest known picture of the Franky in it's B&W state?

    I hope this link works.
This is supposedly from Magic Mountain, dated 08-15-1977. The earliest
B&W franky pics I was aware of were the mid September pics from the
Whisky. As you can see, the Franky has 2 knobs. I know the mid
September pics also shows the Franky with 2 knobs.
Does anyone have a verified earlier picture of the Franky B&W or is this
the earliest we have so far?

No there's a pic of it before we believe it was striped. Think we've pretty much decided that was the Franky based on the dent on the lower horn.

Yes, I've seen that pic. I'm not asking if it's the earliest picture of the
Franky, I'm asking if it's the earliest picture of the Franky painted
black and white. I haven't been able to find anything earlier than
the September pics from the Whisky.

Is Dave playing some rhythm guitar in that pic?

Didn't the Frankie have a white pickguard before the black one? I thought I saw a picture of Frankie before the black pickguard somewhere.

No, there are pics of Ed holding an axe with all of his guitars and the Franky
is painted red, black and white and has a white pickguard. I have
never seen a pic of the Franky painted just Black n White with a white
    pickguard.

Other than this pic from Magic Mountain and the 2 or 3 of Ed at the
Whisky in September, I'm not aware of any other pics of the Franky, painted
black n white, before the recording of VH1. Maybe jimi11580 would have
    some insight.

Also, in the video on vhnd of Van Halen covering KISS' "All the way", there
is a pic of Dave and Ed and the Franky is black n white and has the
2 knobs. Dave is wearing the same pants as from that magazine that
features the very first Dave interview. The pic is from September 1977
    at the Whisky.

I question the 8/15 date. I've had this same boot for years (bought it in Japan!) and the guess going way back was that this was from October 1977, as the band is announced as a "Warner Brothers Recording artist" before the first song, On Fire. VH was signed in the fall of 1977 and August seems to early for that intro. Even setlist.fm dates this recording as 10/1.

Does anyone have the exact date VH was signed and became an official "Warner Brothers recording artist"?

Just checked the liner notes on the CD and it's listed as October and being one of the first shows the band played aft being signed. Not that these are always accurate on boots, but this is a slick professional packaging and the logic to me makes sense.

I think this Magic Mountain date has been questioned forever. Aug or Oct.

This photo was dated Aug 15 by the fan who took the photo, Kat on facebook and what she said recently. But she still could have the wrong date? maybe?

I bet Van Halen Rising has the timeline of the date WBR signed VH.. might give us more clues.

Also, it may be possible that VH played there a couple of times - August and later in October? So her pic could be from August but the recording from October?

My signed book is coming tomorrow from vhnd.com - can't wait! Agreed that Greg probably has little stuff like this answered.

Look in the Franky Pictorial history thread, page 1 is a B&W Franky with a white pic guard.

White pickguard. Is this from when he peeled off the pinstripes and just prior to re-taping and painting it red? I've got the Guitar Player mag with the Ed "lesson" and he's got the red Franky with white pickguard in it. Same type of pickguard with single coil holes.

We used to go to Magic Mountain back then. It's possible I was there as a 13 year old when Van Halen was playing and I never even knew it. Or who Van Halen even was. Crazy.
