More detailed review later, but for now: Eddie looked happier, and more content, than I can ever remember seeing him. Considering his trials and tribulations of the recent past, it was beyond fantastic to see him like that tonight. Side note: I recorded soundcheck (audio only) and it turned out pretty decent; will try and post it ASAP.

Ok so this was my fourth time seeing VH since Roth rejoined. Bash me, Bash whoever, but this was the absolute BEST Performance by Mr. Roth that I've seen since he rejoined!! The band was as tight as ever. Back to Roth, he lost the painful falsetto and sounded very very good! Best damn American Hard Rock Band of All Time!!

Van Halen brings substance, not much flash to Oak Mountain Amphitheatre.

As my cousin John and I were driving away from the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre last night, he shed some casual wisdom, as he often does.

"You know, I think that at any given moment, in any given genre, there's one band or one artist that's the unquestionable number one in the game," he said. "Nirvana. Metallica. And at one point, that was Van Halen."

Cousin John saw Van Halen twice on the "1984" tour, so he makes a good case.

Trouble is, that was 30 years ago.

Van Halen was a mixed bag last night at Oak Mountain. But from my perspective, everyone in the nearly sold-out venue can take something positive from that performance.

On the plus side, they're not exactly ancient. Willie Nelson and The Rolling Stones are still touring, if you ain't heard.

Eddie Van Halen, one of the world's most popular and renowned guitarists, can still shred. His brother Alex can still handle his own behind the drum kit. Eddie's son, Wolfgang, is a very talented bass player who did his thing.

And David Lee Roth – well, he's David Lee Roth. He can still sing, and he's still all over the place. About what you'd expect from an aging rock vocalist.

He's still a super weird guy, too. Diamond Dave took two opportunities to ramble at length during the show – the first was a guide to how to be him for Halloween (complete with a quick quip about how he talks to God while on stage), the second was a story about meeting James Brown (his personal hero) at the MTV Music Awards in 1985.

The quartet was in sync rhythmically, aside from Roth's vocals straying from the sheet music a bit. The energy and stage antics weren't there, but that was to be expected from three dudes that are over 60.

To their credit, they didn't try to cover anything up with pyrotechnics or other special effects the same way other hair metal bands would. The stage setup was nothing more than several rows of lights and a very basic light board that wasn't much more than background filler (and was somewhat covered up by Alex's gong).

Also to their credit, they played for just over two hours. And with only two songs from their largely ignored 2012 album "A Different Kind of Truth," they poured on a potent blend of hits and deeper cuts. (Check out the full set list if you'd like.)

As far as how good the performance was last night? Well, that all depends on what you went to see last night.

If you were hoping to catch an unforgettable rock show full of all sorts of crazy stunts and brain-liquefying displays of musicianship, well, aside from some great guitar work from Eddie, you were probably in the wrong place.

But if you wanted to see a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band with their most important original members? If you wanted to cross a big name off your bucket list that hasn't toured regularly the past couple decades? If you wanted to refuel your nostalgia tank by witnessing live performances of some of the biggest hits of the late 70s and early 80s? You probably had a good time.

I see Eddie's wearing in-ear monitors. His monitor issues a few weeks back must have spurred the change.

I'll have to agree with you on this. I'm glad he didn't do that at the Charlotte show I went to last Friday.
