Default Fair Warning vs Led Zeppelin IV, song for song ...

A showdown between arguably the most beloved Van Halen album by the hardcore fan base vs arguably Led Zeppelin's most popular album. "Fair Warning" vs "ZoSo". "VH IV" vs "LZ IV". Song for song.

P.S. I've combined Sunday Afternoon In The Park/One Foot Out The Door so both albums will have 8 songs.

Mean Street vs Black Dog - Mean Street (Just barely)
Dirty Movies vs Rock And Roll - Dirty Movies
Sinner's Swing! vs The Battle Of Evermore - Sinner's Swing (Although TBOE is awesome)
Hear About It Later vs Stairway To Heaven - Hear About It Later (I'm so burned out on STH)
Unchained vs Misty Mountain Hop - Unchained
Push Comes To Shove vs Four Sticks - Four Sticks (Very underrated tune from LZ IV)
So This Is Love? vs Going To California - Going To California
Sunday Afternoon In The Park/One Foot Out The Door vs When The Levee Breaks - When The Levee Breaks (WTLB is my favorite track from LZ IV and one of my all-time favorites from LZ)

Final Score - Fair Warning wins 5-3
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

I'm so burned out on LZ 4 I couldn't do this fairly period. If you ask me which I album I'd play right now, it's FW by a mile.

I hear ya'. I just hope I didn't set the stage for a Michael Anthony vs John Paul Jones pissing match ...

    God that's a tough one.

Mean Street/Black Dog - Mean Street
Dirty Movies/Rock N Roll - Tie. I love 'em both.
    Sinner's Swing/Battle of Evermore - Sinner's Swing
Hear About it Later/Stairway to Heaven - Burned out or not STH is an all time great.
    Unchained/Misty Mountain Hop - Unchained
Push Comes to Shove/Four Sticks - PCTS - I don't really like Four Sticks all that much.
So This Is Love/Going to California - So This Is Love?
Sunday Afternoon in the Park/When the Levee Breaks - When The Levee Breaks.

    Fair Warning wins 5-2-1
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

    Led Zeppelin wins 8-0...easily.

Fair Warning is amazing but in this contest it's doesn't even get out of the dressing room for the match.

Mean Street vs Black Dog - Mean Street Tempted to tie this one. My favorite riff from John Paul Jones vs one of my favorite riffs from Eddie Van Halen. The intro to MS breaks the tie.

Dirty Movies vs Rock And Roll - Dirty Movies Torn. R&R is the one LZ you can play live and the crowd can dance to it. But I'm so burnt out on the 1-4-5 chord progression. That's not even songwriting in my book. DM has guitar playing for days and is a song Eddie actually had to write.

Sinner's Swing! vs The Battle Of Evermore - Sinner's Swing If it wasn't for bagpipes and sitar, mandolin would be my least favorite instrument. The sound of it here irritates me to no end. Add in all that overdubbed yowling from Plant which isn't quite on key and far too many rambling nonsensical ad-libbed lyrics and just about any VH song is going to beat it.

Hear About It Later vs Stairway To Heaven - Hear About It Later So do I go all "objective" and say "This is considered one of the greatest songs ever so it has to win"? Nah...I've never gotten what is so great about STH to be honest. I guess because its format was copied so many times by other bands? Other people did the "soft/hard" thing better imo. Great guitar solo at least.

Unchained vs Misty Mountain Hop - Misty Mountain Hop I love that lurching riff. I also love the Unchained riff, but always felt like Dave didn't quite know what to sing in the verses.

Push Comes To Shove vs Four Sticks - Push Comes to Shove Great composition from Eddie and Dave. Twists and turns throughout the song and an epic solo. FS sounds like a gimmick LZ came up with while drinking or stoned. I think the song would be a lot better if Bonham put in a real drum part after a verse or two. (Like Everybody Wants Some) Tribal drumming gets old in a hurry for me. Page may have been drunk while playing it because it sounds like he messes up at the end of the riff every time to me. Geddy Lee vocal by Plant is ok.

So This Is Love? vs Going To California - So This is Love Not too bad for a mandolin song. I like Plant's vocal a lot. But the solo in STIL by itself is hard to beat.

Sunday Afternoon In The Park/One Foot Out The Door vs When The Levee Breaks - When The Levee Breaks Those drums are too epic. This song kicks ass. The solo in OFOTD kept it close, but LZ came strong in this matchup.

FW wins 6-2 One of my all time favorite albums vs an album I do like, but which has some 1960s stink on it with the "oh wow man" vibe.

This. I love Fair Warning, but Zeppelin IV is one of the greatest albums of all time.

What's next, Beethoven's Fifth vs Diver Down?

Well, truth be told, Beethoven was a little weak with his lyrics. Maybe he forgot the "f@#*in' words" ...

There are probably a lot of people who would like DD more.

As you can see from this thread, there are people who like FW more than LZ iv so it's not as outrageous a concept as you are claiming.

I'm not nearly as much into Zeppelin, as I am with Van Halen, although only a fool wouldn't admit Zep's superior influence and legacy.
For me though, it's Fair Warning all the way. Not by a landslide, but it's still a decisive victory.
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.

I think Rolling Stone magazine would say it's not close.

I disagree. "Influence and legacy" is very close.

Zep exerted a huge influence over the 70s and beyond. Page was pretty influential too....although I would argue Clapton was the bigger influence. Maybe Iommi too. (Heavy metal is STILL the genre that teen boys play when they pick up the guitar)

VH exerted a huge influence over the 80s and beyond. Eddie was THE main guitar influence of his era...much bigger than what Page was. Not just playing either, but also the fact that we can now go to a music store and see rows of strat style guitars with humbucker pickups too. There is nothing remotely comparable for a Page legacy.

It's not a huge gap in influence at all. In rock history, I see the influences for each decade thus:

    50s-Elvis
    60s-Beatles
    70s-Led Zep
    80s-Van Halen
    90s-Nirvana

There are others too, but those are the ones who exerted the biggest influence over their era. It is historically correct to compare the two bands in terms of influence. If we want to bring sales into it, then there is more of a gap....but Garth Brooks, Elton John, and Madonna have outsold Zep if that is a factor.
