Most of us here agree about Aerosmith "selling out", right?

Now how many of you thought that Eddie "sold out" when he did "Beat It"?

Or the band "selling out" on the failed Crystal Pepsi commercial.

I can't stand Aerosmith anymore and think that their act has grown very old and tiresome. But are we all blinded by our passion for Van Halen?

This came to mind the other night when I was watching the video history of "the real" Michael Jackson the other night and I could wait to go to work so I could post this.

I know man, Aerosmith is one of my favorite bands. I don't think VH is/has/will sell out. NOT possible!

I may catch a lot of flack for this, so take it easy on me, will ya?

If you think about it, Van Halen and Dave parted ways years back for many reasons. Van Halen wanted to 'move on'; that has been the M.O. of their career since then. They did quite well with Sammy, and tried a LOT of new things with Gary, but of course that didn't work out. Assuming Dave is back in the band, there would have to be a LOT of ironing out to do before they even ATTEMPTED to make music.

Anytime a band reunites like this, it basically IS a sell-out. Honestly, I think Van Halen would be better off musically if they found a 4th, and EXTREMELY CAPABLE, singer. Getting Roth back is a decision based on pressure from the record company, the band's peers, and most certainly the fans. I consider that a sell-out.

I'm not saying it's a BAD thing; in fact, I think that VH's only option at this point is to have Dave back, and I look forward to hearing/seeing it. And if they ARE doing it for the fans, well, that's who they're in the business for, so it's an acceptable form of sell-out.

Aerosmith, on the other hand, has written the same song now for about 7 years, and keep releasing it with a new name. Their overt use of Alicia Silverstone (and even Liv Tyler) in their videos is a DEPLORABLE sell-out. No Alicia, no Aerosmith anymore. Without her, MTV would have looked the other way, and as we know, no MTV, no success these days.

So, yes, I think the reunion is a sell-out, but not of the same ilk as Aerosmith. Hell, they even have an Aerosmith ride at Disney. Big difference there.

Bah!

Remember folks that Ed didnt accept ONE DIME for the beat it thing. It was just a bunch of fun for him and seemed like a cool thing to do at the time.

And I feel the same way about Aerosmith that I do with Van Halen. If you get to a point in your "career" (yes, this IS a career...ya know, where you make your money?) where you are marketable enough to where pepsi wants to play a clip of your stuff and will pay you for it, fuckin go for it. Selling out? To what? Money? Thats the whole POINT! Making the music is a gas, I'm sure. Ya think they want to do it for free though? Hell no! Make as much as you frickin can while your marketable. Thats America.

So when I see the term "selling out", I wonder, who is offended by this and why?? Selling out to what?!? An ideal? A philosophy that they had from the beggining? I know allot of bands claim from the git go that the money doesnt interest them (especially in punk music), and they want nothing to do with it. In fact, thats why one of my favorites, Janes Addiction broke up. They Honestly werent in it for the glamour and despised it. There best times were when they were a cult fav, underground band. If they were to later on do commercials and shit, and go back on what originally appealed to themselves and there fan base, fine, call them sell outs. That I would understand.

VH sellouts? Dont piss me off with that. It doesnt even apply. Bleeh.

THAT, can be taken up in the NBA title up for grabs? thread in Non Music Meeting Place. Feel free to give your opinions on just how good a chance the celtics have in obtaining the title (*snicker*)over there.

Right about the NBA topic.

But even though Eddie didn't get paid for Beat It, he should have and just donated it to a charity.(even though Eddie claims that he didn't think that anyone would know that was him, come on man, who else sounds like that?)

But the Right Now your drinking Crystal Pepsi was a sell out.
I understand that they are in it to make money, but at what cost?

What exactly was the cost there? What did it "cost" them? People keep on using that term with negative connotations and I just dont get it. HOW did they "sellout" and what is wrong with it?

The whole point hinges on this statement in my opinion, and I think it's a good point. I think there's no question that we assign different levels of logic to things depending on how emotional we are towards it.

When Lars Ulrich says that if someone downloads And Justice For All, he feels he's being screwed out of his $1.25 (just an arbitrary number of course), a lot of us think he's a sell out who's only in it for money.

Now when David Lee Roth says that when someone buys Fair Warning at the VanHalenStore, he feels he deserves his $1.25 the general impression around here is that he's in the right.

I realize that they aren't the same issue, but both moves indicate artists who are very aware of the financial side of music, and want their fair share. It's odd that one artist is applauded for keeping an eye on the bottom line, and another is roasted for the same thing.

I started a thread once wondering how we'd feel if it was Eddie Van Halen leading the charge against Napster. It's a moot point of course, but I'd be willing to bet that some people would change their opinion depending on who is the one suing Napster.

Personally, I think the Crystal Pepsi thing was a sellout. And I know the whole theory about the Pepsi people changing one note and using it anyway, but I still think that a song loses some of its integrity when it's used to shell a product. I bet most people here laughed their asses off when KISS was in that Pepsi commercial, but somehow we can turn around and justify Van Halen letting their song in there.

I hate hearing any rock song in commercials; Who songs, Hendrix songs, Van Halen songs etc.

Anyway, blah blah blah on my part.

Just take a look at Moby...everyone one of his songs were put on commericials or movies...i mean i think that guy has a fantastic musical mind but listen he himself new the only way he could get his songs heard was by getting them on tv in commercials where people would hear them and say thats a catchy tune
selling out aint all that bad

I just dont like it when bands totally change their style just to fit whats going on in the music industry thats shitty...Metallica, Aerosmith good examples

Correct me if I am wrong but the crystal pepsi jingle wasn't really VH from what I have heard. It just resembled "Right Now" very very much. I'm not posative but I thought I saw that somewhere before, could be wrong

Selling out = purposely wanting to make money
RIGHT?...Everyone ask themselves: Is the only reason you have a job is to make money?
I realize some of you like your job BUT: would you do it for 1/2 or even 1/4 of the money? Interesting question heh?
I suppose some of you think that since Aerosmith is a sellout for using Alicia Silverstone and Liv Tyler in their vids means that Def Leppard is a sellout for having a one-armed drummer. I don't think so!
For God's sake: Liv Tyler is Steven Tylers daughter!!!!
All I expect (and I hope all, or some, agree)is that Van Halen puts out a great Rock and Roll album.
If you think they are sellouts or great rockers that want to catch the old vibe...then so be it.
ROCK ON VAN HALEN!!!!!!
