Default What is your favorite Van Halen album, and why?

"Van Halen", the album that began it all. Often imitated, never duplicated. The record that gave rock & roll a much needed kick in the ass right in the midst of the "disco craze" of 1978.

The iconic "Runnin' With The Devil", "Eruption", "You Really Got Me", "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Jamie's Cryin'" are nearly upstaged by the stellar deep cuts of "I'm The One", "Atomic Punk", "Feel Your Love Tonight", "Little Dreamer", "Ice Cream Man" and "On Fire". VH's debut album doesn't contain a single weak or throw away song.

From the opening sounds of the backwards car horns on "Runnin' With The Devil" to the final fade out on "On Fire", the entire band absolutely shines. Eddie Van Halen dazzles and amazes like no one else ever had before while revolutionizing the way an electric guitar could be played. David Lee Roth's whoops, hollers and screams and clever lyrics jibe perfectly with Eddie's guitar. Alex Van Halen keeps the beat and pounds away on the drums while synching beautifully with his brother. Michael Anthony holds it all together on bass and delivers some of the greatest background vocals ever recorded, especially in the hard rock genre.

For my money, "Van Halen" is not only the best album from VH, but it can go toe to toe against any rock album ever made and do more than hold its own. This record is quite simply 35 minutes and 32 seconds of musical greatness ...

Everything you said (except for Little Dreamer) is why I also choose Van Halen.

"Little Dreamer" might also be my least favorite song on "Van Halen", but it's still vey a good tune, and IMO, is arguably better than the weakest track on any other VH album.

Most band's first, or sometimes second album is their best because they usually are the best of the songs they'd been playing for years before getting signed, whereas the follow-ups are written quicker with less hunger as time goes on. That isn't to say someone can't like a later VH album better, but it does seem to be the case with many bands more often than not.

Anyway, VH is also my favorite.

I'll take Little Dreamer 9 times out of 10, over Jamie's Cryin'.
There's some club versions of LD that sound killer with a slightly different tempo, yet I love the album version too. Roth said that they included it into their first world tour set, to break the pace and give the set some more dynamics. I think it's a fun song all around.

I read that "Jamie" was written in the studio as a last minute thing. To me, it sounds like it. Good guitar riffs and harmony vocals, but it's my least favorite on the first album.

"Balance". It was the darkest album with Hagar, my first VH concert, and I was a senior in high school. It jut all came together, and, this may be key - I can still enjoy it.

I would say "VH1" as it's what got me into playing guitar, but I don't listen to it anymore. Reason being, I overplayed it to the extreme.

Same goes for most of Zeppelin, and PF's "Dark Side of the Moon."

    I overdosed

But, "Balance" still gets a play every now and then from me. For whatever reason, my brain still likes to hear it

Van Halen's debut album simply can't be denied as one of the greatest ever, and one of the most important ones for rock guitar. THE most important one - IMO.
Having said that, 1984 still gets the vote for my favorite VH album. That one had it all for me, and is still my "desert island" pick - if I had to narrow it down to just one...

The songs are timeless, the guitar is insane, the production is top notch, Ed's ideas/creativity are flowing all over, the rockin' tracks do what they're supposed too, the keyboard tracks are just as killer, the track sequencing is perfect, etc.

1984 for this kid. Hasn't changed since, well, 1984!!! Haha

Fair Warning for me. I just like the mood the best. I get burnt out on the classic era sometimes just from listening to it so much through the years but FW is always welcome to my ears.

OU812 is my favorite album, and here's why.

The second album with Sammy Hagar at the helm is the most diverse musically in the Van Halen catalog, IMO. Mine All Mine and Finish What Ya Started are like nothing Van Halen did before or after. In an era of rock power-ballads, When It's Love set a bar that no other band could reach. Cabo Wabo is Make it Last, Van Halenized. AFU is a ball-busting concert opener. Black and Blue is the Drop Dead Legs of the Sammy era. Source of Infection features one of Eddie's best pieces of music. Sucker in a 3 Piece is another stadium rocker. A Apolitical Blues is just a fun cover, featuring Eddie on the piano and Sammy on guitar.

I love Little Dreamer it's one of my VH1 faves and the production on 1984 has never, personally, thrilled me. F.U.C.K was the album that got me in to VH as a 13 year old and holds a special place in my heart and childhood but to pick one, it would have to be Fair Warning. It's just the epitome of Van Halen from Ed's first note to last and Dave's opening swagger to last.

I have to disagree. Back in the 80s, it was the 3rd album that was recognised as the game changer as at that point, the band (often signed in their very early 20s) had matured as songwriters and found their groove. The first album is usually cheaply and hastily recorded, comprising of the best bunch of their early attempts at writing.

The Number of the Beast, Slippery When Wet, Master of Puppets, Sin After Sin, Pyromania, Stay Hungry and (some would argue) Women and Children First are examples of a band hitting their stride on the 3rd album.

I'd argue that bands that hit the ground running are the ones that tend to slide, unable to replicate what they achieved. Guns 'n' Roses, Skid Row, Warrant and Giant being prime examples.

Probably between Van Halen and Fair Warning.

FW is my favorite VH album. I remember the time and place. I was living with a roomate. We drank beer together by the pool at the apartments, and we both like VH. I was 26 at the time and single. It was a special time. I love Hard Rock the most, as a whole, over pop rock, or commerical rock. So, I guess FW fulfilled that more to my liking than any other album, on the whole. I don't know of any back-to-back VH songs that I like better on any album, than "Sinner's Swing" - "HAIL".
