Default Why hasn't Ed ever recorded a "true" follow up to Eruption?

I know I'll probably get hassled for this.... But here goes nothing: I was just watching Ed's solo from one of the Jones Beach shows from last week. He's such an amazing player. Eruption is so iconic. But although I know there have been other guitar instrumentals on VH albums I wonder why Ed has never tried to create like a true follow-up to Eruption and put it on a VH album. Not necessarily Eruption II but ya know another balls to the wall, look at me kind of guitar instrumental. It's really never crossed my mind until tonight while I was watching that clip from the concert.

I mean I guess if I have to answer my own question it's perhaps he's not interested in trying to repeat history. And sure it'd be hard, if not impossible, to top Eruption but it'd sure be interesting to see him try.

I don't think Eddie thinks about it like that. It wasn't even Eddie's idea to put Eruption on the record. I always thought of Spanish Fly as sort of a follow up to Eruption.

I wish he would add a new section to his solo too, but he seemed to lose interest in that stuff in the mid 80's. To me, starting around 1984 and on, he got more into songwriting and the guitar hero fireworks kind of took a backseat. I'm not saying he got better or worse--he simply changed.

yeah i think I remember reading that story somewhere that Eruption was just Ed warming up and Ted overheard it and was like we gotta put that on the record.

He created his masterpiece. It was time to move on create a Little Guitars, or something else. Works like that have to come from the heart, too.

Even if he did it woulda never reached an Eruption level. Plus, part of what made Eruption so popular (on radio) was it had a song directly after it that was great. It helped make it just that much cooler. Without YRGM...not as much radio play. Not as well known.

Eddie used to say that in interviews.

    Another BS Eddie story.

Eruption was planned and thought out.

I've been playing guitar since the mid '80s. It came pretty easy to me. First thing I learned to play was the Dreams Solo. That's a lie. E 12 bar blues. Then eventually I got the tab book for 5150 and learned the Dreams solo. Can I play Eruption? I like to think so. Have I ever leaned it? Nope. It's the one thing I think is Ed's and won't copy. I play parts when I'm alone for fun. I've also been asked to play it in bands. I refuse. I already play and sound like Ed. What's next? Wig and a VH cover band? Nah. I gotta try to be a little original.

And Spanish Fly is the follow up.

I never liked Eruption and never thought it was one of his best solos at all.
Aside from the classical part at the end.
The intro part is good and the end. The rest... meh.
Spanish Fly was a much better piece.

The thing about Ed is that he never really did what Hendrix and Page and others would do.
He never went off and did an entirely new solo on Ice Cream Man say for five minutes, which is really draining on someone. Why not? Would people care?

    I agree.

"Spanish fly" was equally as amazing, and beautifully composed.
When he played it on the second tour, electric, it was even more jaw-dropping than Eruption.

Probably more accurate to say it was Eddie practicing his live solo spot for a gig that night. He's not really a "wing it" guy.

Not to mention, the intro to Fools is pretty Eruptive.

I think Primary was an attempt (albeit a very self-conscious one) and it fell flat.

Like others said, these things have to be inspired. I'm among those who wishes he would do something entirely different with his lie solo spot as opposed to just playing a medley of of his instrumentals.
I likewise think Al's solo is kinda cheesy, so maybe the answer is for the two (or three?) of them to create something new.

In a Guitar World article on VH3 before it was released, the writer said that it was "The guitar album VH fans have been waiting for since 1984, and that primary was a sort of update on Eruption". I was completely underwhelmed when I heard it. Primary was half baked to say the least...

I've read in old interviews where Eddie said he made a mistake in Eruption and that's all he hears when he listens to it. I wonder what he thinks of it now.
