    Default New Orleans suggestions

Hey fellow VH fans I'm working in Baton Rouge area for 3 months. Anyone from that area (or been there) have any recommendations for food or things to check out? Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, I might even drive into Houston one weekend we're off. More food and interesting things to see, not so much for booze.

    Thanks.

I'm not sure which one it was, but we know a couple that just went there for a weekend and said the highlight of their trip was visiting an old plantation museum. They're both big history buffs.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Leave the French Quarter before dark !!! At the last VH show of 2012 Tour, I made the mistake of going out at 2 in the morning--I almost had to shoot my way back out of there.

New Orleans eh? Like EVHinTex said, New Orleans after midnight in the FQ gets a little strange. In my younger years, I would have tempted faith and stayed out until sunrise, but now.....? eh.....
However, that being said, I will tip my hat to the City of New Orleans. They have made the effort to have a large police presence in the French Quarter. Not only do you have N.O.P.D, but Jefferson Parish Sheriff Office and Louisiana State Police in large numbers patrolling and walking the Quarter to keep everyone safe and the violent bullshit down to a minimum. And, if there is some type of festival happening in New Orleans on any given weekend, The police are in numbers x 5. It's a lot more comforting to see them there than years past. But, after midnight, you aren't missing anything and I wouldn't be down in the mix.

Food: "Royal Street Oyster House". One of my favs. Pretty much anywhere in the Quarter has some great food.
"Daisy Dukes". Great late night food. Seafood omelets are damn good.
"Snug Harbor" on Frenchman St. Great steaks.
"Camelia Grill" in the french quarter. Best greasy ass hamburgers on planet earth. Very cool 50's old school feel to it.
"Cafe Maspero" also in the quarter. Seafood and sandwiches are great.
    "Landry's Seafood" not bad either.

Bars: Lafitte Blacksmith Bar. A must. My absolutely favorite bar on Bourbon St. Plus, it's just down the street enough to be out of all the Bourbon St drama. It's old, and dark inside. Very cool place.
Pat O's. Not much to say really, it's just a famous drinking hole. Worth a visit.

Riverwalk Mall: Across from Harrah's casino. Lots of cool shops, stores and cool place to watch all the big ships moving up and down the Mississippi. Large sitting areas outside if you choice to eat or drink. Time killer for sure.

Cafe Du Monde: Coffee is strong as hell. But, go for the Beignets.

Jackson Square: Great place to be in the early evenings on a weekend. Tons of street performers, magicians, Haunted Tours, Carriage Rides, Art..etc. Do this for sure.

Frenchmen Street: If you want to get out of the French Quarter drama, go to this place without a doubt. Just east of the Quarter and this place has restaurants, jazz bars, art, musicians, and everything else you can imagine. It is a great hangout and have fun area. Lots to do, see and meet some really cool people.

WWII Museum: This is a must. It is outstanding. A little pricey, but well worth it. Tom Hanks had a big hand in getting this developed and opened. It is the old factory building where they built the original landing craft that the navy used in WWII.

New Orleans Zoo: Cool place, but it's a zoo. Ya know, been to 1, been to all of them.

New Orleans Aquarium is not to shabby. I was impressed with the place. Down on the riverfront area next to the French Quarter.

Civil War Battle grounds: Cool tour. Ride on a old river paddle boat to the area. Takes about 30 minutes and it's cool to be on the Mississippi River. Recommend this, esp if you're a history buff. Boat docks/leaves near the Riverwalk Mall.

Lafayette La: Pre'jeans. Great seafood, but be prepared to wait a little while, esp on the weekends.

Old Time Grocery Store. Good food. PoBoys and Oysters, if you like those. Google it.

Beaux Bridge If you're there long enough, the freaking Crawfish Fest is great. However, I don't remember when that is actually held. I just know that Crawfish season will begin around Oct/Nov.

Baton Rouge B.R. has a lot of hidden gems. Just ask around. But, for the love of God, GET TICKETS TO A LSU GAME. Go and experience it, even if you are not a fan. A LSU game in Death Valley Stadium is a must. Fan or not, you'll have a blast!!!!!!!!

    Hope this helps. Have fun.

If forgot to mention that if you head to Lafayette on I-10, "USUALLY" it's no big deal. The Atchafalaya Basin bridge, which is around 15 plus miles long, is a cool drive. Driving over the marsh lands near Whiskey Bay is pretty damn cool....HOWEVER, it's 2 lanes on either side, the speed limit drops and God Forbid there is a accident, you are stuck!!!! Been stuck on that fucker a few times and it's a nightmare. Plus, on either end of the bridge, if you are not doing the posted speed limit, the state boys are there waiting, and there are usually several of them. But, once off the bridge, it bumps back up to 70-75mph.

    Just an FYI.

HH<-----Wish we were coming down to the area sometime soon, I'd give ya call. But, won't be down until the LSU/Florida game.--------------

Hurricane summed it up nicely. Do not wander off of the French quarter at night! There usually is a number of 80's cover bands playing in the quarter on any given night. I saw Brad Gillis from Night Ranger join one of the bands a couple of years ago.

Pat O'Briens is a good place to go, the hurricanes there are very strong, I wouldn't drink more than 2. If you do go to Pat O's the glasses are refundable, so take them to the bar before you leave. The WWII museum is a must if you're down there.

As far as food and hotels go, I'd look on Trip Advisor.

    Have fun, be safe!

Shit, almost forgot to mention that there is a Katrina museum somewhere near downtown, I think. I've heard a lot about it, but never have been to it. But, I've heard that it is something to see. Google that too.

Like Dr. 5115 said, the bands are great. Lots of decent 80's cover bands that play the dives down in the quarter. Lenny Kravitz lives down there and is known for showing up out of the blue. I don't know which bar this happened at, but the Foo's showed up totally unannounced and did an entire set or 2. Like most of the bars down there, the stages are up against the glass so when you're walking down Bourbon St, you can always see what's happening. It's my understanding that the Foo's spent half the set playing to the crowd on the street and the other half of the set to the lucky peeps in the bar. I've heard several different stories about it and not sure of the location/name of the bar or what actually went down. Guess I should google that myself and investigate it. Think this may have been in 2014 or so.

House of Blues usually has some named acts playing every weekend. Hell, Prince showed up and played a set there last year. Was totally unannounced. That type of shit happens all the time.

While on Bourbon St, watch out for the Tranny's. There's a ton of them. They like getting pics taken then try to say you owe them $$. Also, plenty of stripper clubs/bars down there. Don't be lured by the bullshit they spout to get ya in there. Free drinks blah, blah, blah. Once your in, they'll try like hell to get your money. If they offer you the moon, you'll just end up with a space rock....know what I'm saying???? They'll send the strippers out on the street in the front and they'll leach on to guys to get them to come in. Con-artist with talent. Watch yourself.

Also, remember this. Street hustling and betting is a big thing. The locals like to bet you $$ to figure out riddles and shit. So, if someone ask you, "Hey, I bet you I can guess where you got your shoes at"...... DON'T FALL FOR IT. The answer to that question is, "I GOT MY SHOES ON MY FEET AND ON THE STREET." That shuts them down. However, if you are approached, just keep walking because usually there are 100's of other ppl around you. Just don't play into their stupid ass games.

New Orleans is a fun town. For the most part, the locals are really good people and they're just having fun. But, there is that dark side that rears its ugly head after midnight. That's the shit you wanna miss. But, try to get down there for a while. Spend some time and just be vigilant of where you're at and your surroundings. You'll have a blast.

10 years this month I was down there waiting on Katrina. The next 4 days afterwards what pure HELL ON EARTH. Hard to believe it's been 10 fucking years. Sheeze.

Well, that explains a lot, the hurricanes are very strong. I feel somewhat vindicated now 15 years later.

NO was a port of call on a cruise Sweet Thing and I, along with some friends went on years ago. One of the friends is from NO and chose to not drink and served as our tour guide for the day. That was good because had he not been on the wagon we'd all probably still be @ Pat O's sitting by that fountain drinking hurricanes wondering what time we need to be back on board.

If you see these, DO NOT PURCHASE. Usually sold at Tropical Isle and the Funky Pirate, down on Bourbon St. It's sole purpose is to knock you on your ass, quick. 2 of these and you're done.

They're loaded and extremely sweet. In my opinion, they're fucking nasty.

The strongest drink I've ever had in N.O. is I think a Monsoon at Port of Call, it's off of the quarter and is more of a local place.

What is a Monsoon made of? Never heard of it. The name sounds scary.
