    Default Over-rated!

    Controversy abounds!

For every guitar god that is vaunted by the masses there is always someone shaking their head saying 'I just don't see the fuss'. So which are your top five highly-rated guitarists do you just don't rate?

I don't mean the guys who get a mention here or there, like Adrian Smith or those who split opinion like Kirk Hammett, I mean so highly-rated that it's de facto to recognise their genius.

    1) Jimi Hendrix - don't even get me started on this guy.

    2) Warren DeMartini - I heard so much about his taste and technique. Completely unimpressed.

    3) Ace Frehley - as Ed once said: 'really?'

    4) Jimmy Page

    5) Guthrie Govan - an absolute monster player but no legacy and no unique style. Back in the 80s many talented guitarists were dismissed by pros and magazines with 'yeah, they're technical but can they write a great song? Where's their instantly recognisable style?" and everyone nodded sagely. Guthrie, for all his chops, has neither and guitarists aren't flocking to learn his solos.

The 2 Jims totally don't belong on that list, not a big Kiss fan but Ace influenced a shit load of great guitarists and Warren does have good taste and technique. I agree with #5 though.

What I like about Govan is that he's not afraid to be weird. He did a performance with the Aristocrats (it's on YouTube) where they had a squeaky chicken toy solo.

Steve Vai. He's extremely talented and his music obviously touches a lot of people, but for whatever reason it just doesn't move me or inspire me at all.

Maybe a guy like Steve Vai would be qualified to rank on highly rated guitarist that just don`t rate and I bet even then he wouldn't do such a thing.

Oh, come on, like you've never said anything similar amongst to peers. Never said you didn't rate a movie, actor or sports star (and wouldn't because you're not an elite-level pro in their field)? If you don't want to partake that's fair enough. Taking offence at the thread is also fair enough, but to hang around posting whilst taking offence is just bizarre.

This reminds me of when GW asked Eddie to rate other guitarists... "I hate doing this because I'll come across like an asshole, and too many people already think I'm an asshole!"
We all have our different tastes and likes, so I'll play along:

    1) Warren DeMartini. Looked cool in the videos but that's where it ended for me. Just was never a fan, which is weird, because he's best buds with Jakey Lou...
    2) Joe Satriani. Sterile. Cold. Boring, though I can admit that he's a master guitarist. Nothing about his playing makes me want to listen to him, and I think Vai trumps him on every level.
    3) Pete Townsend. I like plenty of music that came before "my generation", and am a fan of plenty of the original rockers. Pete isn't one of them.
    4) Dimebag Darrel. I just don't feel it from his playing. Flash and pizazz for sure, yet nothing that makes me wanna either practice or party. R.I.P.
    5) Jimi Hendrix. Sorry, but I don't think he's the second coming... Amazing for what he did, yet I feel the myth outweighs the substance.

    IMO.
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora
