Post Black Pastors Call For Removal Of Planned Parenthood Founder Bust From Smithsonian

A band of black pastors called for the removal of the bust of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery in a letter on Friday.

Ten pastors who are with Ministers Taking a Stand — a nonprofit that promotes educational choice, family principles and entrepreneurship — signed onto the letter which argued that Sanger was not really a “champion of justice” and thus her bust should be removed from the Smithsonian’s “Struggle for Justice” exhibit which honors “great achievements…striking down long-standing segregationist practices and discrimination in American society.”

That exhibit also holds the busts of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., which the pastors allege Sanger would not have wanted either of which to be born.

“We will not remain silent while the National Portrait Gallery venerates someone who sought to eradicate our very existence,” the letter, obtained by CNS News, reads. “Ms. Sanger was a racist, elitist, and her beliefs led to massive destruction of unborn human life. She was no hero.”

“Perhaps your institution is a victim of propaganda advanced by those who support abortion,” the letter also said. “Nevertheless, a prestigious institution like the National Portrait Gallery should have higher standards and subject its honorees to higher scrutiny.”

“Until now the national spotlight has not fallen on Sanger’s background. However, the recent revelations about aborted babies’ organs and body parts being sold, have not only brought Planned Parenthood under intense scrutiny, but also raised questions about its founder, Margaret Sanger. If the revelations were not consistent with her character and ideas, one might argue that Planned Parenthood has ‘gone rogue’ and abandoned Sanger. The fact is that the behavior of these abortionists, their callous and cavalier attitude toward these babies, is completely in keeping with Sanger’s perverse vision for America.”

The letter also notes that the rate of abortions among minority communities, specifically black and Latino communities, is higher.

“This explains why elective abortion remains the number one cause of death among black Americans, higher than all other causes combined,” the pastors argued. “We will not remain silent while the National Portrait Gallery venerates someone who sought to eradicate our very existence.”

The letter strongly criticizes Sanger’s support of eugenics, specifically black eugenics.

The letter to Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery, was penned after a series of undercover videos purport to show Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted fetal tissue for research

Smithsonian Museum Responds to Black Pastors Who Demanded Removal of Planned Parenthood Founder’s Bust

    Aug. 22, 2015

The Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery has denied the request by a band of black pastors to have the bust of Planned Parenthood’s founder removed from the museum’s “Struggle for Justice exhibit.”

The “Struggle for Justice” exhibit honors “great achievements…striking down long-standing segregationist practices and discrimination in American society,” according to the Smithsonian’s website. Citing Margaret Sanger’s support of eugenics, the 10 pastors with Ministers Taking a Stand — a nonprofit that promotes educational choice, family principles and entrepreneurship — contested that Sanger did not really exemplify that of a “champion of justice,” and thus her bust should be removed from the exhibit.

In a response letter to those pastors, Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery, said that while Sanger’s “association with the eugenics movement shadowed her achievements in sex education and contraception, making her a figure of controversy,” the museum will “respectfully decline to remove” her bust.

“There is no ‘moral test’ for people to be accepted into the National Portrait Gallery,” Sajet wrote in the two-page letter. “Instead, we try to draw attention to those who have made a significant impact on American history and culture, and that includes both the accomplished and reprehensible. We recognize Sanger’s advocacy on behalf of women’s health and education whilst acknowledging her sometimes deplorable beliefs.”

“The most admirable aspects of American culture are that we attempt to acknowledge past mistakes, engage in open and civilized discourse, and set a path towards a better future,” she wrote. “Removing those people from the Portrait Gallery who have been less than perfect would deprive future generations of valuable lessons concerning personal ambition and achievement on one hand, and human imperfection and fallibility on the other.”

Bishop E.W. Jackson, president and founder of Ministers Taking a Stand, told CNS News that the group of pastors would continue to fight to have Sanger removed from the museum and said Sajet’s letter avoided the issues his group had brought up.

“If they must recognize her ‘historical significance,’ place her with busts of Pharaoh, Herod, Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong, Goebbels, Pol Pot and Dr. Mengele,” Jackson said. “This would put her in her proper historical context with the infamous and evil figures who committed genocide.”
