Default NAD! 5153 50 watt head

Yep, I had to do it! I just picked it up at lunch. I can't wait to start getting it dialed in with my effects and guitars.

Haven't played my 50w 5150 III in quite a while. I did put a British made G12H Heritage in the 1x12 that it's hooked up to. I believe them to be killer little amps---I have pushed a 4x12 with it

    I'll be plugging it into a 2x12 with a greenback and a 70's blackback.

My only compliant initially is that it's kind of noisy. I'm guessing tubes. It just drives me insane that they can't sell an amp at this price with better, quieter tubes in it.

I use an MXR SmartGate in front of my 5150 Combo....kills the noise nicely.

I've used a Smart Gate in the f/x loop - first in the chain, to kill the preamp buzz and leave a cleaner path for delay/chorus/etc.

I put a Mullard in v1, an LPS in the pi, and a few jj's in other spots. It quieted it down a lot.

Playing at gig or rehearsal levels?
Some sort of noise gate/etc. might still be a good idea for down the road... Great amps and tone - but they are noisy when the gain is turned up.

Don't put Sovtek LPS or reissue Tung-Sols in the cathode follower positions (which on your 50W looks like V4 and V6). The way they're designed they can't handle the voltage differential between the heater and the cathode that the CF position puts on the tube and they die. Current generation (round getter) and the previous generation (square getter) Chinese tubes work REALLY well in that position and in the PI section, too.

Wow, sounds like you know your stuff! Can you recommend a tube set? I was looking at this one, http://www.dougstubes.com/preamp-tonekit-12ax7-7.html. I'd only need to get the Tungsol and the 3 Ruby 7025ss tubes, since I already have the others. I wish I knew what these power tubes were also.

If this were 10 years ago I'd suggest Winged-C/SED (formerly Svetlana before New Sensor bought the name) 6L6GCs for that. However, now, they're almost as expensive as NOS tubes and harder to find.

    Electro-Harmonix makes a nice 6L6GC: https://tubedepot.com/products/elect...er-vacuum-tube

JJs are pretty nice, too, but I think they're not as nice as their EL34/E34L/6CA7s: https://tubedepot.com/products/jj-6l...er-vacuum-tube

I've heard some good things about the Tung-Sol STRs, too: https://tubedepot.com/products/tung-...er-vacuum-tube

Fortunately, they're not obscenely expensive, so if you want to get a couple different pairs to try out you can. See what works for you.

I think JJ's got the British-type tubes (EL34/EL84) down while EH has the American-type (6L6/6V6).

I'm assuming the Ruby str's are Tungsol? I liked the Ruby el34str's.

What about preamp tubes? What would you recommend?

Ruby Tubes are predominantly Chinese, actually.

As far as the preamp tubes, you seem to have that covered pretty well, actually. Sometimes an amp just needs something different in each position, and everybody's tastes are different.

My Bugera 1960 Infinium has a Tung-Sol in V1, the stock Chinese tube in V2, and a 12AX7B from China in V3, if I remember correctly. I'd have to look again, but the amp is at my parents' place as we're still mid-move.
