    Default HIPGNOSIS

Hipgnosis was an English art design group based in London that specialised in creating cover art for the albums of rock musicians and bands. Hipgnosis consisted primarily of Cambridge natives Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, and later Peter Christopherson.

Post your favorite Hipgnosis album cover.

So many good ones I've been meaning to get their book one of these days. Such eclectic artwork. Off the top of my head this is one of my favorites.

Def Leppard loved Hipgnosis' work with UFO, so they asked them to do the 2nd albun cover.

Always looked for the Hipgnosis name on every album. Kelly and Mouse was another great one (think Steve Miller and Journey)

Wings and Todd... always two of my favorites.

Loved this packaging but the pointed cut outs didn't hold up well in LP crates and on and off shelves over the years.

I was able to track down 5 of the 6 covers back in the used LP store days in the 90's... every one I ever found had the water color activated on the inner sleeve. To find a un-wetted one would have been amazing.

We literally found a couple hundred of 12x12 Obsession tagboard display posters in the dumpster of a record shop (Peaches) in '78 maybe '79?

All the walls of a fort we built in the woods were covered with that image but the only song I ever l ever knew until years later was Cherry. I actually picked up the CD one day on a whim because I remembered the fort. Great album.

I didn't realize they had their own website until this thread peaked my interest enough to read up about them.

Lots of extra advertising advert & singles scans included with the full album cover artwork along with the extra booklets & posters in certain albums. They even designed a couple Sammy Hagar album covers check out Musical Windows.

Hipgnosis, designer of the band's previous album covers, offered three ideas, one of which was a small child entering his parents' bedroom to find them having sex: "copulating, like animals!" The final concept was, unusually, designed by Waters. At the time he lived near Clapham Common, and regularly drove past Battersea Power Station, which was by then approaching the end of its useful life. A view of the building was chosen for the cover image, and the band commissioned German company Ballon Fabrik (who had previously constructed Zeppelin airships) and Australian artist Jeffrey Shaw to build a 30 feet porcine balloon (known as Algie). The balloon was inflated with helium and maneuvered into position on 2 December, with a marksman ready to fire if it escaped. Unfortunately inclement weather delayed work, and the band's manager Steve O'Rourke neglected to book the marksman for a second day; the balloon broke free of its moorings and disappeared from view. It eventually landed in Kent and was recovered by a local farmer, who was apparently furious that it had "scared his cows".The balloon was recovered and filming continued for a third day, but as the early photographs of the power station were considered better, the image of the pig was later superimposed onto one of those

I always loved the really uncomfortable one's that provoked the imagination:

Animal Magnetism, Lights Out, Force it.

"Lights out" is so odd & homo-erotic, with Mogg in the foreground & Schenker
in the back, looking effeminate, and putting his jump-suit back on.

I think UFO & Scorpions had the best covers, in the 70's & very early eighties.
    "Love drive" is fantastic.

"Tokyo Tapes" has the best "live album" cover of all time, imo.

Don't think it was Hipgnosis, but i also loved the cover to Saxon's "Innocence is
    no excuse."

The front shot, then the back cover where the same girl is murdering various men.

I saw them on that tour, in 85, at a small theater.
The guitar players had rows of JCM800 Marshalls, and THAT was the fucking sound of
    heavy metal.
I was right up front, even was jokingly berated by Biff at one point, much to my
horror (i wasn't headbanging or moving around enough. LOL.)

I just checked my vinyl version & i must have the original pressing.

Mine features three murder scenes of men, with the cover model standing by each guy.

One guy has a bag over his head, another guy in a tie, under a tree.
I think she's holding what looks like a crossbow.

Each frame is featured in black & white.

Yeah Absolutely- That's the beauty of art in many instances at first glance the eyes aren't always even sure what their looking at.....and the imagination wanders upon reflection.....what one see's will often be different than others......I just thought of that painting of Kramer from Seinfeld as an example where one of the old rich art collectors said he sees a vile disgusting miscreant of many self absorbed perverted deprepications only out to satisfy only his utmost urgent impulses.....and then he said it was brilliant he loved it..........

My first UFO album was The Wild Willing and Innocent......I first heard my radio station CFOX play Makin Movies when the album came out and I loved that riff then picked up the album........to this day still one of my favorites a very unique deep artistic collection of tunes on there.....even the last tune..... slow morbidly moody and dark " Profession Of Violence" is kind of a special tune for me no idea why but it grabbed be in a way that seemed haunting.....I know this tune and album are not considered as essential creme a la creme of UFO's catalog without Michael Shenker.....but for me it's one of my favorites along with Mechanix.......

But back to the artwork......what the hell is that we're looking at on the cover and what could it possibly mean......

This is where the modern age of digital downloads falls flat.......the fun mystique and appreciation for the old actual record album covers, liner notes, posters booklets and so forth....is all but lost on the new generation......

BUT- I suspect why the artists and record company's still reissue remastered deluxe editions for the old school rock fans that grew up with vinyl and often enjoyed looking at the covers while listening to the album for the first time after scooping it up in person at the record store. How many times did you have to choose between one album or the other back then.....always a never-ending list of LP's to pick up next time when we had more money.

Check out all the extra artwork for that UFO album I'd never seen all these different versions before pretty wild kooky stuff. Artwork such as this I haven't noticed too much lately.....probably out there but I'm out of the loop.....almost reminds me of Helmut Newton's photography in a nonclandescant polar atsmomere. A little spooky not quite as simple as Andy Warhols colorful Stones work.
