Default It was 1981 and Van Halen was on their brutal 'Party 'til You Die' tour.....

    "Party 'til You Die"
    A former backline technician

"It was 1981 and Van Halen was on their brutal 'Party 'til You Die' tour. We'd just wrapped the Pittsburgh show, where everything went relatively smoothly (for a VH show), and the next stop was a pretty important gig in Maryland.

"We began to load in at Capitol Center at 8 a.m., with the gig being that evening. Set up went without any unusual issues, and a sound check was scheduled for 2 p.m. With the stage set and backline ready to roll, the band filters in, minus Dave [Lee Roth]. After determining that nobody has heard from him for some time, calls are frantically made to try and locate him.

"The band had rooms at the Hilton downtown, and many attempts to call his room proved to be useless. Finally, a production assistant was sent to go check on him, some 30 minutes away at the hotel. When the hotel manager finally let the P.A. in the room, they were greeted by this scene: Dave and several women strewn around the room, some nude, some dressed in what appeared to be pieces of midshipmen's uniforms. The manager also mentioned that there had been several early morning complaints of loud voices and other assorted noises coming from the place.

"It was later learned that Dave had been out partying with locals after arriving in town. Nobody ever really figured out how he pulled this off after a 250-mile trip from Pittsburgh the night before, but that's just Dave for ya. After finally being ushered down to the venue, he finished sound check with his pissed off (and disgusted) band and crew.

"And yes—the 'no brown M&Ms' thing on the tour rider was true!"

No one knew how Dave could party after a 250 mile trip?
Well trip is probably a good word... Coked to the gills.

Rollin orgy back in those days. Oh and in 1938 when BG came to town you can bet that Harry James and Gene Krupa where hold up in some hotel with 5-6 chics too. Never changes.

Nice anecdotes.......but they don't specify who the " Backline Technician " was (???).....and its not from 1981........it's from the 1980 Invasion Tour.

They played Pittsburgh ( St.Paul (??) April 30th, which has video bootleg footage, & Landover Maryland May 1, which also excists a well circulated audio bootleg.

This is the show from the night before the show in Maryland where the story is about.

Here's part of the show from that night in Maryland. The full bootleg is titled Tora Tora.

I dunno. I'm sure Dave did his share of coke, but from what we've heard he was bouncing off the walls as a little kid and his inability to sit still continues unabated to this day. I think that's just the way Dave is with or without coke. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he's never slept in til noon in his entire life.

Coke might just give Dave a bit of what we would get from a cup of coffee or a candy bar.

Yup, I think you're partially right. Dave was always hyperactive, both as a kid, and as an 'adult'.

He's talked about it before.... His "Monkey Hour" dinnertime antics, and his constant visits to the Guidance Counselor in school for (as He said it) "making the other kids crack up..." etc.
Dave's just always been a ball of energy. Add a dash of A.D.D. and there you have it.

Even without a toot of Columbia's finest...

    I love this place.

After 6 posts, someone here was able to nail the exact shows and get the info correct while providing bootleg video proof.

    Well done Heisenberg!
