Default Is Roth really into doing the deep cuts?

    Check out "Drop Dead Legs:"

band's tight and into it, but I get the sense that Roth isn't really happy to have to sing those lyrics. The way he moves on stage is also beyond the acceptable limits of goofiness. On the plus side, he does have the best abs of any 60+ singer still performing.

During his solo career, he never showed any particular fondness for songs such as DDL, Dirty Movies, IASR, etc. I'm wondering if he's being "forced" to sing them now. I always get the sense that he'd be more into singing some jazz tunes.

And do they never play the extended outro? It has one of the best EVH solos ever.

I just watched this video and I honestly don't see any evidence of what you're talking about. It's amazing how regardless of what the guy does, some people are just going to bitch.

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

I thought the “presentation” of the music was insanely boring. I’m sure being there live and having several beers down, it’s fine but honestly, it feels like everyone is just milling around.

It's an awesome song. But the lyrics are not necessarily some of the best they wrote at the time. It could be a Sammy song, lyrics-wise!
Maybe Dave has trouble getting behind them 30 years later - it seems he thought the "vampire" part was funny.

This is not 1982 anymore dude. Fans are OLDER now, you can't expect them to be yelling and pumping their fists can you?

I disagree that Dave doesn't enjoy singing the deep cuts. All one has to do is check out the Red Rocks "Romeo Delight" video to see proof.

Is Romeo Delight really a deep cut really anymore? They've done that song live forever.

Well the band never played these 3 songs ever. So same could be said for all of them. I'm sure they are NOT intimately familiar playing these like the others. Well the band is pretty damn tight...Dave still re-learning 'em ;-)

And I think he played much deeper cuts (when solo) than VH did w Sammy

Don't worry about it, Brook, that's what this guy does in 90% of his posts. He doesn't like Dave anymore. Of course, I'm assuming he did like him at one time, but I could be wrong.

Kind of have to laugh at the idea of the band "forcing" Roth to do anything he doesn't want to do. If they could, we probably would've gotten another studio album by now.

    What I see is this

60+ man with an artificial hip
60+ man with a creaky back and probably some knee issues
20+ man who isn't in the best physical shape of his life
60+ man who can still hit the drums but probably walks like a 60 year old man

I think given the choice of playing club dates to 1000 people or playing in VH, Roth is perfectly ok doing the deep cuts.

I guess no one really knows who is telling the truth in regards to which party is holding up a recording session, but we do know that Roth has recorded at least one entire album on his own in the past two years, so my money is on Ed not wanting to write as fast as Dave wants to record.

But more to the original point, if they could get Dave to do what songs they wanted, they would not have said: "Let's play As Is in case Dave wants to sing it tonight" at a soundcheck.

Or they simply don't agree on material. Eddie has said even recently that he has more than enough material banked to work up into songs, but that Dave "won't come to the table" because they like different kinds of music. Dave has complained that he and Eddie haven't written any new material together in decades, and also that he's offered up all his material from his work with John 5 to the band, but that there were no takers amongst the Van Halens.

Taken together, this gives me the impression that Eddie isn't interested in material written without him, and that Roth isn't interested in material that's been gathering dust on a shelf. Two stubborn guys in a stalemate.

If this is true, I'd have to side with Eddie on this. To me, two writers are required for real VH music: Eddie AND Dave. They are more than the sum of their parts. But the active ingredient is Eddie's music. If it's good and usable, who cares when it was written and how long it's gone unused? And a song by Dave with another guitar player just isn't Van Halen music. Eddie's the musical nucleus. Dave is the electron that brings a charge to Eddie's music. And not the other way around.
