Default Question about "OU812" inner sleeve?

I'm talking about the pair of hands joined together.
Does anyone know the real meaning of it and its origins?
I always thought VH fans did it on the "5150" tour during "Love walks in".
I'm seeking ideas for a VH tattoo that's all, and want something different than the usual 1984 angel and eddies stripes.
    Any help needed?

The inner sleeve of the original OU812 vinyl version depicted a cryptic hand gesture that eventually became a bond between band and fan. Whatís the origin of that?

ďAlex Van Halen; this is always his little job, big job really, in the band, is to come up with the covers. Pretty much the whole time I was in the band, we left Alex with that job. Eddie and I got together and wrote the songs, but Alex did the covers. That was really his baby. I always came up with the album titles, except for Balance was not my title. That was the first time I didnít name a record but I named the rest of them. OU812 was going to be called Bone. But that hand thing, Mikey invented, because you know the old heavy metal sign. Itís very cute, I think. So Mikey used to take his hand, and I would take my hand and put it up next his and we made that symbol at the end of shows, right? And the fans started doing it back to us, so we put it on OU812 record. But Alex came up with the rest. He hated the name Bone, but we were going to use it because we didnít have a title. But then I saw a delivery truck on the freeway, and its number, the real number of it, on the side of it, its truck number, serial number, was OU812, and I cracked up. And I came in and told the band about it, and they said thatís fuckiní great. So I thought it was hilarious and said letís call the record that. And I mean, it was in the 11th hour so that title didnít have any significance to the cover. Alex had already thought about the monkey, why I donít know, but we all thought it was funny.Ē

Well actually this hand gesture has been used for thousands of years by the Illuminati. You have the traditional devil horns which according to Dio or Gene Simmons was created by them. However both hands are representing the dark prince Satan. The two hands clasped together also outline a woman's vulva which represents Mother Earth and she gives birth to everything we know. Then you have hands together which represent a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. About ready to fly and embark on a new journey which was 5150.

Yeah I made all that up.

That single hand gesture in sign language is "love". I had thought that's what was intended by the band.

never heard that anecdote before, always thought the title was a sneaky retort to DLR's album being called Eat Em And Smile? Maybe that was also true but he doesn't say that there...

nice article actually, never heard of the unreleased/unfinished track 'Numb To The Touch' before either, which Hagar describes as "a traditional, almost Whitesnake, heavy metal type song"

I think "OU812" was on a license plate in a Cheech and Chong movie.

I don't remember which movie though, my memory of their movies is a little cloudy

It won't let me link right to the scene, but it's at 1h4m18s lol

oh wow...have to laugh at this. Sam describing his own contribution to Black N Blue:

lyrically, I was a master on that song and I sang completely… you just listen to it some time. It was like ‘boom, dat, oomph, dat, boom, uh’.... it was so rhythmically correct. And lyrically, it’s not easy to do that, to find a word that’s going to fit with what you’re trying to say, and rhymes and rhythms like that. So I think it’s a masterpiece of phrasing if anything.”
    lmao

For some reason I think I can remember that during Up in Smoke, one of the bands in the Battle of Bands, had a VH inspired stripe job on his guitar. May be the wrong movie. Could be Valley Girl or something around that era. Sort of like Derrek Smalls bass guitar has stripes on it.

The lyrics are obviously a bit crude but I agree that the phrasing and delivery are very good.

I have to laugh reading that interview about OU812. The part where Sammy talked about how Eddie had these riffs and he had a bunch of lyrics in notebooks to work off of. I can envision 5150 around 1987 and this scene playing out.

Eddie - "Hey Sammy what you got for this song" (Source of Infection plays in the background.)

Sammy - "oh I got the perfect lyrics for that" (Opens up one of those cardboard boxes where you store files in. Pulls out a book ad flips through half of it. )

Sammy - "ok how do these lyrics sound? Crank it! Blow out! Uh! Ouch! Help me Now flip on over "

Eddie - "fuckin A, now can you put some melody to it? Lets see what happens when we put it to tape."
