    Default Live Aid 30th Anniversary 7/13/1985 - 7/13/2015

Today marks the 30th anniversary of Live Aid. I was 15 and woke up at 7AM that morning and started taping it and watched/taped it all day.....

This is from one of my three VHS tapes I used. The very opening as seen on Channel 5 in NYC:

I actually lived in Africa for close to four years. Was there for this event, and it was a HUGE deal over there.
Nothing like it before or since. It was a totally different way of life, and those artists were popular, yet seen as deities from across the ocean. This brought music closer to the people - in many Afrikaaner's eyes

Hard to explain, but this event changed how the continent lived and breathed. It had a profound ripple effect throughout the various sub-cultures.
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

Was quite a day! I worked midnight to 8A the night before, and I had my video tape set to try and catch some of the acts I liked. I think a Beta tape maxed out at 6 hours, so I probably had alarms set to swap out tapes. Had to be back to work at 4P. Somehow I think something messed up and I didn't get the Led Zeppelin part. I remember U2s part (and shouldn't forget it now that they've included it with The Unforgettable Fire set!). I remember Queen. I'm think it was the Who where the video feed cut out for a it ("Won't Get Fooled Again"?). I remember Phil Collins playing both sides of the Atlantic. I remember Paul McCartney and a cast of thousands doing "Let It Be". I remember way too many shots of the MTV veejays.

I didn't even know Judas Priest played Live Aid until yesterday watched this for the first time after all these years.

Oh yeah! They were high on my list of wanting to see that day. They didn't disappoint.
Besides Zeppelin and Priest, I really wanted to see The Cars, The Who, Bowie, U2, Pretenders, Hall & Oates and T. Petty.

I coulda swore Sabbath played as well, but if they did I missed it.

It was a fun day I'll never forget.

If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

I also did not know Sabbath played until I saw this article the other day...Follow link to article and you can watch their set...

    Black Sabbath

Sabbath played Live Aid? Though overshadowed by younger acts who played later in the day, Sabbath's 10 a.m. Philadelphia set marked the first time the group's four original members had played together in seven years. While frontman Ozzy Osbourne had found multi-platinum success as a solo act, guitarist Tony Iommi and a succession of singers had carried on the Sabbath name with diminishing results. The three songs the band played that day — Children of the Grave, Iron Man and Paranoid — didn't make much of an impact, the appearance gave the Sabbath brand a much-needed boost and set the stage for a long-term reunion in 1997.
