Default EVH Phase 90 or MXR CSP-101CL Custom Shop Script Phase 90?

Which is better? Has anyone tried both of them?

Haven't tried the MXR Custom Shop model, but I do own the EVH one, and can't rave about it enough!!!
It looks as cool as hell, but sounds just as amazing IMO.

MXR had the 'block logo' phase 90's out for quite a while. The script reissues are just that (to my knowledge), reissues of the earlier ones. Probably some upgraded components though.
The EVH pedal does both the 'block' and 'script' versions of the Phase 90 effect. And yes, I can tell the difference! LOL

To me? Go for the EVH....

I used to have a block one, and although it was a cool pedal, it was too much for the VH stuff. Plus, I hated the bypass on it. Do you know if the evh is true bypass?

The suggested setting for the EVH in script mode is 25%. I also used to own a block model and found that too extreme for early VH . I turned the rate knob to zero, and had better luck. I do prefer the more subtle EVH in script mode.

Not positive about the true bypass thing, but it should be easy enough to look up.

I personally like the custom shop Phase 90.
I'm pretty sure it's true bypass, and it sounds great.

I'm not pimping Ed's pedals... In fact, I think the "Unchained" button on his flanger is f**king garbage!
Nice looking pedal but only usable with the EVH switch 'out' IMO. Same as the wah...great looking and I love the dual blue LED's, yet the tonal sweep stinks. Again, IMO.

The Phase 90 is really cool though. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat!

I own both. Basically, just take your pick of how intense you want the effect. From least to most intense it's CS '74, EVH Script, EVH Block. The CS is very subtle, the EVH in Script mode is a tad bit more present, and the EVH in non-script mode is very in your face. I do have to say that there may be some extra magic mojo in the CS version, as the overall sweep and nature of the effect is a bit more pleasant. I just wish there was an intensity knob so I could tweak it up a tiny bit.

TL;DR - I own both, the differences are subtle, and I use the EVH because I like having options.

The above pedal is just the EVH Phase 90 in permanent script mode.

This pedal is the hand-wired '74 version: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/deta...FYSPHwodsnwNMQ

Yeah it's still good! I use the EVH in Script mode, so it's effectively the same thing I use.

    Very true.
I'm like you though. I like having the options... LOL

I would've bought the EVH, but I couldn't find a sound I liked in the block logo mode, but that's just based on my taste

Just curious, were you able to get the 'Unchained' setting without the EVH switch engaged? I got close, but could never get it dead-on. I got frustrated trying and just pushed the EVH button in. My settings were something like the first 3 knobs set around 10 o' clock and the Regen knob at 3. I had read somewhere setting them all at noon would do the trick, but that definitely didn't work in my case.

As for Ledvedder's question, I LOVE my EVH phase 90, and think you get a good bang for your buck since it's basically the script and block in one pedal. It's not true-bypass though. However, I've never noticed any tone-suck from it either.

Same here...setting all the knobs to 12 noon didn't work for me. I putzed around with some different settings and got closer to what I wanted.
There's a lot of options and the controls are interactive, so it takes time and patience to dial in a good sound. That's why I'm sticking with my MXR Micro flanger - 2 knobs which I have rigged with a 'set-it-and-forget-it' mentality. LOL .

    Rate - 11 o'clock (40%) and Regen - 5 o/clock (100%).
I saw those settings on a Jim Dunlop YT video. The player had his set like this for demoing the intro to HAIL. I leave it like that for all my flange bursts. Not for everyone, but it works for me.
