Five years ago at this time, in March of 1998, there was excitement in the air. Van Halen was ready to unleash their brand new album. Although no one had heard the new music, it was described as "adventurous." Krave.com was giving weekly reviews of new songs. Gary Cherone said (paraphrasing) "there is no doubt in my mind that this is gonna take off. The record will make you think, it will make you rock, it will make you boogie." The Van Halen News Desk was had a countdown clock for the release of VH3. "Without You" was the #1 song on the radio in the mainstream rock chart. It looked like Van Halen was ready for world domination with singer #3. Whoever would have thought that five years down the line, VH3 would be the last VH album, VH would be without a singer, and Sammy and Dave would have toured. It's so depressing that VH has just fizzled out the way it did. Five years from now, where will VH be?

It really is sad. What has happened besides a whole lot of nothing ?

"No news is good news", "rumours are just that..." etc.etc.etc...etc... It just goes on and on with no end to the silence in site.

Let's see here. 5 years ago I was a newlywed and living in an apartment. Now I live in a house, I have a 3 year old daughter, and a son on the way. Van Halen put out VH3, toured, started to record a follow up, split with their lead singer, have no record label, no management, Ed got cancer, Ed got separated from his wife, Alex is no where to be found and strangly their 2 ex-lead singers toured together. Talk about total opposite situations.

</font>
LOL!

I'll never forget when I heard an advanced playing of "Without You" and I was like

The next time I was laughing my ass off. I was like "You got rid of Sam for this?"
Then when I heard "Fire In the Hole" I was then like WHOA! This sucks! Is Gary trying to sound like Sammy? WTF? You've got to be kidding me! Gary's singing was annoying!(with VH. I liked him in Extreme)

Then, finally, I saw 'em live....
*shakes his head*
Gary tried. The whole band tried. The Dave stuff was cool. I thought Gary did a good job with it. The Sammy stuff was out of his range. I ended up leaving early, very disappointed. My copy of "3" went on my shelf and has stayed there. I washed my hands of them after that. It wasn't until I heard Gary was out and it piqued my curiosity ever since....

How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!

But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!-

I liked Without You but that was about it on the cd. Does anyone know what that song is about? I have always thought it was from Ed to Sam.

Hey you, wake up, get yourself together
yeah you, so you think you made it better
'cause you know it's coming at you
While your back is turned
Look too long and I can't help you
So clear your head, find a way home
Better make up your mind
First you say that you will
Then you say you won't
Well I'm just trying to figure
Try and figure you out

How long can this go on
Tell me what is wrong
And maybe there's a way
That we can work it out

There must be some kind of way
That we can make it right
But I, I just can't do it all
Without you, without you

Hey fool, wise up, better late than never
Yeah you, you know that nothing lasts forever
Nobody ever told you that your
Time is running out
Too bad and I can't help you

How long can this go on
Tell me what is wrong
And maybe there's a way
That we can work it out

There must be some kind of way
That we can make it right
But I, I just can't do it all
Without you, without you

The point i'm trying to make
You got to give more than you take
You gotta give, give more than you take
Gotta, gotta, gotta work it out

The last line sounds close to 'Give to Live' lyrics, which is on the cd EVH helped produce.
If you want a little peace, sometimes you got to fight
We got to walk through the darkness
Before we stand in the light.

It's just music, so get over it already. The world existed before Van Halen and will go on long after they are gone. I learned to enjoy it while it lasted.

I just picked up a DVD of two short sets of live VH from MTV. The first set is from 1995. The second, 1998. I must tell you, The band looked more old and tired in '95 with Sam than they did three years later with Gary. I also saw both tours live. In 1995 I was uninspired. In '98 I really didn't care for them. But, looking back, I think VH sounded better on the III Tour.Forget singers, I'm talking "band" here. "Without You" sounds much better live than studio. And " A Year To The Day" live blew me away.
I get chills when I watch it.(And listen!)

Never really thought about it but 'Without You' could just as easily be from Ed to Dave after the failed reunion in 96. I just kinda thought it is a response to 'Little White Lies'. Could be to both or neither.

I remember leaving my apartment at 11:30pm so I could get to the virgin music store in times square, I was one of the first few on line for the release of the album at 1:00am. Wow what a long time ago, I have a 4 year old son and 4 month old daughter, but no new Vanhalen.
