I bet one of those bass drums has a fridge inside lol

Alex uses top of the line classic maple Ludwig drums. They are made up of 7 plies of maple and he uses a mirror chrome finish on the set. Ludwig has offered that finish over thr years and Alex used it on the F.U.C.K. tour set back in 1991. Ludwig offeres three top of the line wood series drums. Legacy classic, a shell made just like late 60's Ludwigs with a maple three ply shell with a maple reinforcement ring, Legacy mahogany, a shell just like legacy classic but useing a maple, poplar, mahogany shell like the Ludwigs from the late 40's through the mid 60's and the classic maple, which is a little bit lower in cost compared to the other two but a popular choice among many professionals. Alex has prefered this line as it has more of a modern punch and attck to it which probably helps compete with Eddie's amps.

As of late, alex seems to be using a hammered brass Ludwig 6.5x14 snare of some sort with tube lugs, a P-86 strainer and die cast hoops. Alex also prefers the Paiste 2002 series for cymbals, which is the same series John Bonham used from around 1972-1973 until his passing in 1980. Hope this helps!

Thanks Van Hampshire, Always wondered why his kick drums were extra thick. Almost looks like 4 of them (double double?). Is this just for aesthetics?

That one crash in that pic looks like it took a beating. I know he doesn't angle them that way.

Nice write up too Van Hampshire. He uses 16 x16 and 18 x 16 floor toms right? What are the sizes of the rack toms? 10 x9 and 13 x 10?

I want to say that his toms are either 8x12 and 9x13 or it could be 9x13 and 10x14. The bass drums are probably 18x26 with a 10x26 "woofer" attached out front. Not sure what size the smaller kicks are. It's funny because Alex uses a double pedal now even though he has all of those kick drums. I heard from someone in the know that he started doing that as the sound guy was complaining about mixing the seperate bass drums. When one bass drum is mic'd, it is easier to control and the sound out front can be cleaner. seems odd to me though as he has used two seperate bass drums for years.

In fact, in one of the clips Dave is reflected in the Bass Drum, like a mirror.
    It was a cool effect.

But that set is one of the nicest i've ever seen, design wise.

Alex has always had these killer kits, this one looks stunning under lights ... Would it be safe to say he is using some copper plated hardware for aesthetics ? Always loved his cymbal choice 2002 are my fav sounding cymbal and so thankful he never went the Sabian route so many others have ...

The hardware is in fact copper or copper plated. Ludwig does a gold look as an option anyone can order and I think gold was on Alex's last set, but copper is something special they must have done for Alex. Ludwig has a good number of endorsers but there are not too many in Alex's bracket except for Ringo(Happy Birthday Ringo!), Carl Palmer, Bun E. Carlos and maybe a few others. Alex wants something, Alex gets it. In fact I think this year marks Alex's 35th year as an official endorser with Ludwig even though he has pretty much played Ludwigs since the early 70's.

Interesting that last tour looked like a tribute to the VHI kit. Now it looks like he's paying homage to his VHII kit. This is one beautiful kit and it sounded POWERFUL Sunday night!!

As stated above, It's maple ply's with a Chrome wrap finish. It's like Ringo's Black Oyster Pearl Wrap, but Chrome. I bet the chrome wrap alone for Al's drums are $3000 just for the material..............maybe more.

I think the two smaller outside kicks on this tour he is using aren't actually being used they are there to make it showy.
