This tiny election proves Trump’s coalition is alive and well

    By Salena Zito

    April 13, 2019

Less than a month ago, conservative Judge Brian Hagedorn was a dead man walking.

As he raced against liberal Judge Lisa Neubauer for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the local press portrayed him as an anti-gay extremist and bigot. They called out the Christian school he founded for its code of conduct stipulating “no sex outside of marriage between a man and a woman.”

Never mind that this code of conduct is common practice at private religious schools across the country.

The Democrats seized on the moment. Outside money poured in from groups like Planned Parenthood and former Attorney General Eric Holder’s National Democratic Redistricting Committee, funding ads that portrayed Hagedorn as a radical. Meanwhile, Hagedorn’s biggest donor, the Wisconsin Realtors Association, demanded he return their contribution because his beliefs conflicted with the values of its members. Other traditional GOP corporate donors like the Chamber of Commerce ghosted him.

    That’s when things got interesting.

Conservative activist Mary Magdalen Moser, a poll worker for the Republicans, sensed a turn in the tide. She was infuriated by the media’s treatment of Hagedorn — and she knew the populist coalition that put Trump in office would be electrified.

“Wisconsinites have always been a very open bunch,” she told me. “As long as you stay out of our way, we let you do your own thing. People were incensed that Neubauer went after Hagedorn’s faith.”

Despite the bad press, Hagedorn waged a tireless grass-roots effort to personally tell his story every day across the state.

Finally, in the last week before the election, the Republican State Leadership Committee delivered a cash Hail Mary for Hagedorn. Their million-dollar ads prominently showcased President Trump as a booster of the conservative Supreme Court, saying he is “defending our rights, all thanks to your vote.” The ads also noted that extreme out-of-state special-interest groups were spending millions to back liberal Neubauer and “spreading false attacks against conservative, rule-of-law Judge Brian Hagedorn, just like they did against Justice [Brett] Kavanaugh.”

This reminder of Trump’s record on conservative justices, twinned with voters sympathetic to the issue of religious liberty, delivered a one-two punch.

Against all odds, Hagedorn won the state, including two Democratic-leaning counties, Racine and Kenosha — just like Trump did in 2016.

“Trump and Hagedorn won because they didn’t back down,” said Moser, a 56-year-old who lives in Kenosha. Though she grew up in a Democratic home and has never registered with either party, she calls the treatment of Hagedorn a tipping point.

“Freedom of religion cannot be perverted into freedom from religion,” Moser said. “Tolerance must remain a two-way street, especially in our judicial branch.”

As the Democratic Party shifts further left, they need to face a question: What do you do when you have all the money in the world, the media and culture on your side and you still struggle to win over voters?

But the Republicans, too, must face a question: In the age of the online bully, how do you woo business donors scared off from supporting socially conservative candidates?
Still, one thing is entirely clear: If you run on the platform of defending religious freedom, it can be a winner — even among voters who aren’t traditional conservatives.

And, for many, the issue of conservative justices is also a slam dunk.

“Trump’s ability to deliver conservative judges is a major factor in galvanizing Trump’s coalition,” said retired Wisconsin state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, who Hagedorn once clerked for. “Anyone who doesn’t think that’s a winning message for him in 2020 still isn’t paying attention to a big part of this country.”

The lessons of this statewide election will likely resonate with Americans well beyond its (once true-blue) borders. Wisconsin is now officially a swing state, and what happens here will likely determine who occupies the White House come 2021.

The DNC is in Wisconsin for the 2020 election. They'll have to figure out how to get people to go there and actually vote for Democrats. Lol.
    Just go for it!

She's a Trump hater so that's an interesting tweet. She's not wrong and of course this comes down to the question of priorities. Money is a limited resource. Damn near all governments are incapable of saying "we need to spend money on this new thing and we therefore will stop spending on this". They just borrow more and keep on spending. Most people suffer from the same disease.

    Barr Brings Accountability
    Wall Street Journal
    By Kimberley A. Strassel

Trump’s foes call it ‘stunning and scary.’ Here’s what they have to be scared about.

The most inadvertently honest reaction to Attorney General William Barr’s congressional testimony this week came from former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. Mr. Barr had bluntly called out the Federal Bureau of Investigation for “spying” on the Trump campaign in 2016. Mr. Clapper said that was both “stunning and scary.” Indeed.

No doubt a lot of former Obama administration and Hillary Clinton campaign officials, opposition guns for hire, and media members are stunned and scared that the Justice Department finally has a leader willing to address the FBI’s behavior in 2016. They worked very hard to make sure such an accounting never happened. Only in that context can we understand the frantic new Democratic-media campaign to tar the attorney general.

Mr. Barr told the Senate Wednesday that one question he wants answered is why nobody at the FBI briefed the Trump campaign about concerns that low-level aides might have had inappropriate contacts with Russians. That’s “normally” what happens, Mr. Barr said, and the Trump campaign had two obvious people to brief—Rudy Giuliani and Chris Christie, both former federal prosecutors.

It wasn’t only the Trump campaign that the FBI kept in the dark. The bureau routinely briefs Congress on sensitive counterintelligence operations. Yet former Director James Comey admits he deliberately hid his work from both the House and the Senate. And the FBI kept information from yet another overseer, the judicial branch, failing to tell the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that the Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee had paid for the dossier it presented as a basis for a surveillance warrant against Carter Page, a U.S. citizen.

Why the secrecy? Mr. Comey testified that the Trump probe was simply too sensitive for members of congressional intelligence committees to know about—an unbelievable statement given the heavy publicity he gave the investigation of Mrs. Clinton’s improper handling of classified information. Here’s a more plausible explanation: Mr. Comey and his crew have also testified that they were all convinced Mrs. Clinton would win the election. That would have meant that no politician other than the incoming Democratic president would have known the FBI had spied on the Trump team. Nor would the public. A Clinton presidency would have ensured no accountability.

Mr. Trump’s victory destroyed that scenario, and it became clear that the new Republican president would soon know that the former Democratic administration had surveilled his campaign on the basis of information from his rival. At that point two things happened. Neither was accidental, and both were aimed, again, at forestalling accountability.

First, Mr. Comey and other intelligence officials, including Mr. Clapper, engineered the public release of all the scandalous claims against Mr. Trump, to provide some cover. As liberal commentator Matt Taibbi notes in his new book, “Hate Inc.” Mr. Comey’s Jan. 6, 2017, briefing of the president-elect about the dossier was a classic Washington “trick.” It served as the “pretext” to get the details out, a “news hook” to allow the press to publish the dossier—with its salacious fictions about prostitutes and Moscow hotel rooms—and go wild.

Democrats used the furor in their successful push for a special counsel, which gave greater legitimacy to the FBI’s probe. The appointment of a special counsel also froze other oversight. Congress can’t have access to certain documents or ask witnesses certain questions, since that might interfere with the probe. The White House can’t demand answers, because that too would interfere. Mr. Trump’s adversaries got to hide behind Robert Mueller for nearly two years.

Second, Democrats mobilized against the other big threat, incoming Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who had the authority to conduct an internal review. Don’t forget, the dossier wasn’t delivered only to the FBI. Its ultimate owners were the Clinton campaign and the DNC. And one huge outstanding question is just how many Democrats pushing for Mr. Sessions’ recusal in early 2017 did so with full knowledge of the FBI-Clinton tie-up. Certainly no Republicans were aware, and thus they were clueless to the bigger consequences of the unnecessary Sessions recusal.

Namely, that no outsider would take a hard look at the FBI. The Russia question fell to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, an institutionalist who would go on to sign the final application for a surveillance warrant against Mr. Page. Again, no accountability. Meantime, wonder why Democrats tried so hard to mau-mau Mr. Barr into also recusing himself? The goal all along has been to deep-six any discovery until a Democrat returns to the White House.

Mr. Barr didn’t merely refuse to recuse; he’s made clear he plans to plumb the FBI’s actions thoroughly. That makes him Threat No. 1 to everyone who participated in these abuses, and it’s why the liberal media establishment is now disparaging his integrity. They are stunned and scared—that accountability has returned to the Justice Department.

FBI warned Trump in 2016 Russians would try to infiltrate his campaign

    Dec. 18, 2017, 9:08 AM PST / Updated Dec. 18, 2017, 10:23 PM PST
By Ken Dilanian, Julia Ainsley and Carol E. Lee

WASHINGTON — In the weeks after he became the Republican nominee on July 19, 2016, Donald Trump was warned that foreign adversaries, including Russia, would probably try to spy on and infiltrate his campaign, according to multiple government officials familiar with the matter.

The warning came in the form of a high-level counterintelligence briefing by senior FBI officials, the officials said . . .

The candidates were urged to alert the FBI about any suspicious overtures to their campaigns, the officials said . . .

. . . Trump was "briefed and warned" at the session about potential espionage threats from Russia, two former law enforcement officials familiar with the sessions told NBC News. A source close to the White House said their position is that Trump was unaware of the contacts between his campaign and Russians . . .

. . . The situation was complicated by the fact that the FBI had already become aware of contacts between members of the Trump campaign and Russia, and was beginning to investigate further. Former CIA Director John Brennan has said he told the FBI about a pattern of contacts the CIA observed between members of the Trump team and Russians, and former FBI Director James Comey said the bureau then began investigating in July 2016.

Montoya and other former FBI officials told NBC News the FBI would not have wanted to compromise that investigation by saying too much in the counterintelligence briefing of Trump.

By the time of the warning in late July or August, at least seven Trump campaign officials had been in contact with Russians or people linked to Russia, according to public reports. There is no public evidence that the campaign reported any of that to the FBI . . .

Remember, we know from other reporting and court briefings that Trump knew about, for example, Papodopoulis' business with the Russians.

    Donald J. Trump

Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!
