    That's a great story!
Really shows how VH were taking charge of themselves in those days. They paid their dues and worked hard to get where they were on the scene.

Their success was a combination of many factors, but it certainly wasn't an accident.
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

So much of what you hear about VH is the tension and in-fighting... reading stories like this remind of how I felt as a kid when Tom and Jerry would team up as friends in an episode.

And what was I doing that night - 700 miles away? I wish I could have had a Back To The Future experience, where my adult self went back in time to give my little kid self a plane ticket and $3.50 to get in VH show. Then, I would have asked Dave for a job, he would have laughed and declined, and I would have been scarred for life. I guess it's good my adult self didn't show up that day!

    Cannot wait for this book.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

"A La Carte was a cross between ZZ Top and the New York Dolls,” guitarist George Lynch remembered. “They played dirty, gutsy blues-based rock.” By all accounts, A La Carte was a great band, one that if punk and New Wave hadn't taken over Los Angeles in 1977, would have been signed right after Van Halen"

That's good stuff. This book is going to be like cocaine to me. ....Or what I assume cocaine is like since I've never tried it.

Finally some real insight into how this band was born. Sounds like we are going to get a strong case for how important Dave was to what they became. I'm sure Eddie and Alex would have been professional musicians in some capacity even if they had to do weddings, but whatever they did it would not have been anything like VH without the influence of Dave. And that makes me wonder what direction the 80s would have taken.

...This is like going back 1 million years and stepping on a butterfly....then coming back to the present to find out all the people have four arms.

Not only from a musical standpoint but a visual one as well. As much as the music purist in me hates it, image and appearance matter and Van Halen brought it in that department too.
