Default Who is calling the shots, creatively

We all know that the band mostly deferred to DLR in the early days of creative planning, such as merchandise, publicity, even naming the band. He wanted to do it and the brothers really didn't, though Al was involved more than Ed in that regard. Plus, there was a lot less animosity towards Dave's vision than maybe there was as his ego grew apart from the best interests of the rest of the band.

But with that in mind, my question is twofold: 1) Who was the driving force in that regard in the Sam years -- did Ed step in? Did Al take on more responsibility (he already had some). Did Ed let Sam call some shots, until he didn't? Was it more of a... BALANCE (until it wasn't)... Etc.

And 2) With Dave back now, is he back to calling the shots (obviously no chance that it's to the same degree, but he has to be back in the fold in some regard -- look at the album covers)...

I have my opinion but am leaving it wide open for interpretation. I think part two is the real interesting one. A leader coming back after a 20 year absence to possibly take a back seat.

I'd say it's all Dave right now. I don't think any of that stuff interests Ed the least bit. Al and Wolf probably do a little. Just a guess.

The stage show setup and artwork for the tour, shirts, programs etc? The artwork for ADKOT and Tokyo?

Seems like the whole band is 'trying a little harder' this time 'round.
We know that Dave is uber creative with the stage and artwork, but I'll be that the rest of the guys have been giving more input too.

Maybe their PR team has kicked it up a notch? Not sure who has the final say, but this new media friendly and functional Van Halen is a WELCOMED change from days of yore...
They should've been in this mode for ADKoT!

No one is creative in Van Halen anymore. Not a single person. The Van Halen we all knew is gone - I think for ever. Ed's music has become extremely stale- I don't think he even likes doing it anymore. I think they are performing their music maybe to rebuild their legacy after a decade plus of mistakes. I think that is all they are working for at this point. Trying to give the die hard fans enough of the old stuff before they retire, so we don't remember how we were fed complete shit or nothing for over 10 years. Their heart isn't in it anymore and it shows. Most of us are skipping Van Halen here in Chicago and going to see Sammy, Mike and the Circle at Naperville's Ribfest (where Dave played a few years back to a very sparse crowd...) Sammy played a few years back and it was packed! The Circle's Live album sounds great, Van Halen's Live Album sounds good but Dave's voice ruins it for me at this point. And by the way did I say that the current Dave is just creepy?

I'm betting that Dave is the creative mind behind the artwork on the albums, stage design and is certainly the mouthpiece for the band.

I always thought Al was a little more hands on when it came to some artistic stuff. I kinda recall it was he who found that image they used for VH3 cover. Right when Dave returned to the fold there was that photo of Dave and Al checking out some art show of some dude I think they were thinking of using to do some art for the band (it was cool shot and cooler to see those 2 together for the first time since 1996's awkward moment.) I feel like I remember it being said he helped with some of the early tour programs, etc.

here's the photo directly from VHND:

Truthfully, i see very little creativity at all.

You get a live album from 2013 with minimal artwork & packaging.
You get a remaster of the remasters in a standard jewel case with no bonus tracks.
You get another greatest hits tour for the Summer, playing the tunes they did previously.
You get a few televison appearances with "Jump" or "Panama."

There is nothing creative happening within the band.

Dave can't be bothered, it seems, which surprises me.
Ed has no idea where he is, or so he says.

ADKOT was a nice surprise, but then the special project is abandoned.
Same as it ever was, like the song says.

Ed enjoys playing with his son, so he's playing the big tunes.
Dave is probably doing it for his ego, at this point.

Nothing i'd call creative going on, at this point.

    A VH DVD or documentary.
A box set, a true special project.
Remasters in deluxe packaging with bonus tracks.
    A new VH album!

    These would be creative endeavors.

We know DLR did much of the creative/art, also for ADKOT and LIT...but do remember Alex being involved a bit. Alex found the Fair Warning art.

My guess is DLR is doing the artwork, stage setup and Wolfie is picking out the songs.
