Default What did/do your parents think of Van Halen?

I got into Van Halen back in 1978 when I was 14 years old. Here are some of my memories of my parents' thoughts about them:

    My dad:

"Those guys probably just have really big/loud amplifiers. That doesn't make them good."

"I bet they couldn't play their songs the same way twice."

"That guitar player is no Charo or Roy Clark."

I do remember him being pretty impressed with the following two instrumentals when I played them for him ...

    My mom:

"That is giving me a headache! Is it Aerosmith?"

My dad liked them somewhat, once LWAN came out he was blown away by Eddie's playing actually seeing it live and not a music video. Then he became even more impressed when we watched the Les Paul Tribute show.

Mom basically had 1984 entrenched in her brain as it was a staple in her car cassette player.

My dad grudgingly recognized their talent, especially when her heard Big Bad Bill. But he always said they played the same song over and over. I was all, "No, I'm just playing that one over and over..."

My mom got some stories from one of my big-mouthed friends about JD and foul-mouthed sex references at the concert. That pretty much fucked me out of seeing the 1984 tour. Thanks, Rhonda, you meddling bitch.

My parents always liked them. In fact my dad liked Jump so much he made me make him a cassette of it over and over and over for his car. I'm not kidding. A whole 90-minute Memorex tape of Jump.

My parents saw the Beatles live so they were hardly old fart parents who hated rock and roll. They liked it and always supported me listening to and playing whatever I wanted. In fact my mom to this day misses hearing the music coming from my room. My dad said he'd actually like to go see them live so they might.

Back in the mid eighties I played "Spanish Fly" for my grandfather who knew classical and flamenco music. He also was a fan of Les Paul, via the Les Paul and Mary Ford show. He was probably in his late seventies at that time. He listened and liked it! My mistake was not stopping the cassette before "D.O.A." started, lol. His face turned to a grimace of disapproval. lol

My grandmother banned Van Halen from her house after hearing Eruption, saying that he (Eddie) was demon possessed. She was right I believe, especially if you know anything about scriptures but we kept them with us anyway.

Haha. I mentioned it to him recently and he told me he still has it. Why I don't know but he does. I just shook my head at him.

I grew up around music at my house. Mom and Dad were into a little bit of everything, but mostly rock, blues, and soul music.
Grew up with awesome tunes being played quite often.

They didn't 'get it' when I started to play guitar full time, and growing my hair long/smoking cigarettes/drinking etc. , but they were supportive of my talent (which is debatable! Ha) and commitment.
My uncle who got me into hard rock was a KISS fanatic with all the posters and assorted memorabilia, so they were somewhat prepared for my room and garage looking like that too.

3 things I'll never forget... My dad (a major blues fan) said that Eddie can pick up a guitar and make it sing. He also said that in every picture and video, Eddie was always smiling and having fun. Lastly, my aunt (R.I.P.) who was a major Led Zep fan said, "I could listen to Eddie play all night long" .

    Indeed!!!

My Mum was always considered the "coolest" mother among my friends because she liked VH(mainly Dave era) and AC/DC with Bon Scott as well as a lot of the other bands popular during my high school and college years. She really liked Queensryche and Alice In Chains too. She often would watch the Headbanger's Ball with me lol. My junior year in HS, we'd come out of the locker room for warm ups for home basketball games with Thunderstruck playing over the PA. All the parents hated it except for my Mum, and she was the only one who knew it was AC/DC LOL.

She always thought Alex was the coolest and even once told me if she was younger he would be the one she'd go for LMAO!

My Pop is more of a country guy. He does like the Stones, CCR, and the Doors as far as rock, and has told me that VH are impressive musicians though he doesn't care for how hard they rock. A memory I will carry with me forever is when I was around 14 or 15 and was practicing hoops in the driveway. I always had a boom box out with me playing while I'd practice several hours a day during the summers. One day he came home from work right as Ed kicked in to the Top Jimmy solo. Pop stopped before going into the house and said to me, "you call that music?" I replied, "it's the best!" He just laughed and shook his head.

Fortunately, we always lived in a big house - so I was able to play my music LOUD - and not get any grief for it...However, when either of the parents did have reason to enter my room, they would usually do the 'hands over ears, hideous grimace, and "turn that bloody noise down, you'll go deaf"' pose...Nothing's changed - if my Mum visits me even now, or comes in the car with me, it's like going back in time...
