    Default Nice guitar story.

Entertaining story, so bear with me...

I was a regular poster here years ago. My boys were little when I posted and now they are both in college. Blink your eye and a decade flies by. I quit posting after the forum got hijacked several years ago. I contributed to keep it alive then just lost interest in Van Halen.

I have owned a dozen or so EVH-type guitars and have sold them all except one red EBMM Axis. It was/is my favorite and I have kept it for sentimental reasons. I bought it right when 9-11 happened.

I have been really removed from VH for the last 5 or 6 years or so. No interest at all.

We've moved to a new neighborhood and have made lots of new friends. One of the families are huge Van Halen fans. Especially the husband. They were over the other night and he begged me to play for him, so I did. He has a little boy, (they had kids late) that he is raising in the cult (haha, I say that with endearment) and it got me to thinking when I did the same with my boys. I was pretty drunk, but I indulged him. My boys were both home from college and they heard me playing and brought their drums and bass down stairs and we started jamming for about an hour. It was surreal. I felt young again. My friend's little boy gave me a hug when I played 316. When everyone went home my boys told me that it felt like it did years ago. Brought tears to my eyes.

So, now, we are going to do a 'backyard Van Halen tribute' party, my boys and I. There will be like 40 people coming. Some friends are going to brew two kegs of home made beer. Can't believe the interest. I found some singer at a local music academy that has a set of pipes that you can't believe. He is completely dedicated to making the gig happen. Funny, huh? Guy in is early thirties and loves Halen.

Needless to say, I've started practicing like a mad man. I guess I went overboard. My left wrist is killing me. I can't even move it anymore. Never remember getting injured from playing guitar. LOL. I'm icing and heating so I can come through for the gig.

Cool, huh? Amazing, what a little Van Halen does.

    Just thought I'd share.

    Very cool story!
I can relate to a lot of that. Had fun reading your tale, and hope your upcoming party goes great.

Good Luck and have fun. Cheers

I don't know where you live, but if it's anywhere within an hour drive of St. Louis, count me in

Seriously, though, that's a great story. I couldn't help but think when you were describing playing the backyard over a couple kegs that VH music had come full circle. Back to where it began, so to speak
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Great story. Sound like me, I used to be a member about that long ago and just getting back into it now. That would have been a great party to attend.

Awesome story and may be the night that gets you back into the swing of things! One of the coolest rushes is playing at a small gathering like that, where there are mainly all non musicians who get their mind blown when they see a solid player playing the music they love right in front of them. I am certain you have been the talk of the town as the guy who can play just like Ed lol. Just remember to take care of your hands (stretch out and warm-up) as well as take a 10 minute break for every hour of playing. At 54 I learned that the hard way and need another two surgeries.

Yeah. It will be fun. It'll raise my confidence level during this my mid life crisis mode I'm in. haha... I'll be happy if I just play solid. The singer is really good and a handsome young chap, so he'll probably be the focal point and distract people from my mistakes.

You're not kidding. I still have some pain but it's going away. Lots of stretching, lots of ice, lots of heat. It's fun playing all this stuff again. Frustrating, but I'm getting there. The gig is going to happen after the fourth of July. That buys me some time...

Well, the gig happened. July 11th. It was really fun. We were playing the exact same time that VH was playing in San Bernadino, albeit at a different level. lol...
It was fun. About 40 people showed up. My wife turned it into a 'costume party' at the end. Some people showed up REALLY decked out. It was hilarious. I'll try to post some vids. Quality really sucks. Not enough lighting, but I'll throw some bits and pieces up there of the 'best' parts.
