No, they weren't around in 1984 as a touring band.

They were involved in a nineties tour, perhaps Australia.

Yeah you're right. It was part of the FUCK tour. I saw AIC on that tour.

From Dave Leslie, Baby Animals guitarist:

The F.U.C.K. tour (we played 60+ shows) through the U.S. with Van Halen, was probably the most memorable. We got a chance to experience what it’s like touring on that level. 10 semi’s and eight tour buses, it felt like a moving city AND we got to see VH play every night!!

    More:

I mean, you listen to the Van Halen stuff and you get so wrapped up in how great his leads are, and then you listen to what he’s doing on rhythm and it’s mind-blowing.

Far out, man, Edward Van Halen’s an awesome rhythm guitar player. But he’s not a strummer. He comps. These rhythmic sort of stabs. Having done that tour [Baby Animals supported Van Halen on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour], you stand there night after night listening to his parts, and fuck man, that guy’s so good! As well as being a fucking monster solo player, he and Alex just lock in, man. It’s a real lesson.

Read Gear Porn By Dave Leslie: Ernie Ball Music Man EVH

Did you ever pick his brain?

He’d be jamming. He spent a lot of time in our room and you’d watch a lot of stuff, but when I’d ask him something specific he’d go “Aww c’mon man, I’m not a fucking guitar teacher,” y’know, he’d get really coy about it. “Let’s just jam, man!” So I’d like to, and I did garner a little bit of stuff. You can’t not learn by being around and watching a person like that play. But as far as “Can you teach me how to play ‘Eruption’,” he wouldn’t do it. Bastard. Hahaha.

And a great story about Ed giving Dave Leslie one of his Music Man guitars:

Being the affable “Crazy Aussies” that we are, we had made lots of friends in the touring entourage and became quite close to the Van Halen chaps, who took us under their care and made sure that we had access to all the fun activities that a band on that level enjoyed while on tour…

This fourth leg was coming to an end and we were getting ready to do a club tour of U.K. and Europe for a month and then re-joining the VH juggernaut for the eight-week-long fifth and final leg.

The VH boys (Ed and Alex especially) spent lots of time in our dressing-room as it was far less formal than their ‘rockstar’ digs. There was something about a bucket of cold beer and a couple of small amps that seemed to appeal to Ed…

He spent hours between soundcheck and our show drinking and jamming AC/DC songs (Ed knows all Angus’ solos, note for note…) in our little room at the end of the corridor while his management were asking around ‘Where’s Edward?” So, on this evening, Ed strolling into our room with a guitar case didn’t seem all that unusual. He laid it on a dining table and gestured for me to “come, check this out…”

I approached the open case which contained one of his Ernie Ball Music Man EVH signature guitars, quilted top, in RED.

“Cool”, says I, “Is that your new guitar?”

“No” replies he, with big smile “It’s YOUR new guitar!”

As you could imagine, I was floored. I mean this is Edward FUCKING VAN HALEN!!! Giving ME a guitar?!! I have to admit I still get the shiver when I think about that moment! It was literally, a dream come true…

Baby Animals are my favourite Oz band.

I love Dave's playing, especially on "Shaved & Dangerous" (Great album, HORRIBLE title!)

There are some tricky time signature bits on some of those song's.
It sounds like hard rock, but the timing on certain tracks is really sophisticated.

Dave had a great sound, and also amazing rhythm ideas.
I really liked the band, and Suze's voice was so rich: Ballsy yet beautiful.

I stand corrected! Private Life opened on the 0U812 tour. I saw VH twice on the FUCK tour with AIC opening both times and i thought AIC opened the entire tour.
