    Default 1982 "Jump" Demo

Sorry if this was mentioned before here, but I've been on this site almost daily since '99 and own just about every bootleg in existence and definitely never heard of this. Since it's their biggest song I would think this deserves its own thread.

Anyways, just came across this on YouTube. It's an '82 radio interview with Jas Olbrecht for Diver Down and he plays the demo over the fuckin' phone!

    Definitely harder and less poppier.

I remember the whole conversation used to be on youtube, but then Obrecht had it pulled down for some ridiculous reason. It's not like he's releasing it or anything. Pretty cool to hear it in it's original form, and there's a part there that seems to come after the chorus part that is especially cool and I'd like to hear a full instrumental demo with that riff used.

It's kinda funny, when you listen to the main melody on this demo, it's
basically the intro chords to "Panama" on a synth.

Kinda clever how "Panama" followed "Jump" on the actual record.
A bit of a reprise kinda thing.

I remember this entire audio interview, i had it on cassette at one point.

I remember being annoyed by Eddie's comments on Randy Rhoads, which
to me, sounded like a compliment & a dig (at Rhoads) at the same time.
Randy sounded NOTHING like Eddie, just some of the same techniques.

I also recall Jas complimenting Eddie on the fusion lick on "The Full Bug."

The lick Jas was referring to was the wide stretch run, Ed uses to cap
    off the solo.

But Eddie thought he meant the little Jazzy turnaround he does,
post solo, right before the harmonica bit.

I was thinking, "Why is Ed not understanding the obvious, here?"

oh yeah there was a lot of back n forth confusion and repeating questions in this, Ed dropping the phone, etc... But it was late after a show I think. But I laugh bc Ed's always going... "huh?...what was that?" --

Also they talk a lot about Holdsworth and how Ed was pushing him and helped get a deal via Warner Bros. and was gonna produce the record.

Quite a few VH songs revolve around those triads that Eddie is so fond of playing. Major, minor, suspended, etc. Many tunes were written around those 3 note voicings (typically on the D/G/A strings of the guitar) that it's another EVH staple or trademark.

RWTD, Panama, Unchained, DTNA, etc. all have those familiar chordal pieces. Ed even used those same 'tools' on his keyboard pieces like Jump, I'll Wait, Love Walks In, Right Now, etc.
All part of the genius of Ed's songwriting IMO, when you see how basic the forms are, but how exciting and different all those tunes^^^ turned out to be
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.

I remember this years back on the CVH forum.
Being how it's thru the phone and all, I always thought it sounded like video game music.

I had this whole interview as well, listened to it many times. And yes, it was strange how Jas would refer to a section of music and Ed would clearly misunderstand which part he was talking about! But it was a nice inside peek at how Ed was in interviews with somebody he was familiar with.

Jump in G, Panama in E -- works perfectly for respective instrument used for each
