Default Article on Greg Renoff and VH Rising

Getting pretty pumped for this book. I found this very thought-provoking.

“This was no overnight success,” Renoff said, adding that it wasn’t like an “American Idol” situation where you audition and sing a few times and all of a sudden you are touring arenas. “These guys worked their asses off and really had numerous opportunities (to quit) where other people would have folded.”
Renoff said one of those instances came in 1976, when Gene Simmons took Van Halen to New York.
“And KISS’ manager says ‘I don’t see anything here. You guys have no commercial potential.’ This is, like, the manager of the most powerful rock band in the world at that time. It’s hard for me to imagine what that would be like with someone with that level of authority in the industry saying ‘I don’t see it. You guys are never going to make it.’”
They were incredibly dedicated. Most people would quit at some point. I never gave it a lot of thought before, but hearing that from KISS' manager had to be a knife to the ribs. Yet they went back home and kept at it. Amazing.

That is something I would like to see them sitting around talking about. What are their thoughts on that? Was there a particular member of the band who kept them from being discouraged? (Yes...I'm thinking Dave here)

They were ready to pack it in, if the Mo Ostin gig, didn't generate excitement for WB.

At least that was my understanding...

Looking forward to this book. Dave talked about this in his book. He was on to Simmons' plan from the start. He said Gene wanted Eddie for KISS and was trying hard. Gene would invite Eddie to a gig or a party and not say anything to anyone else. Dave, being hip to what was going on, would show up with Ed and give a surprised Gene a look like "yeah, I know what's up". Can't wait to read what was dug up for this book.

Ed and Al would still be playing bars and clubs, had the moment not arrived for them. I believe that.
Dave? Not so sure. I am pretty sure he would be in the entertainment industry somehow, even as a gofer. Like in 'Rocky II' when the hero takes a menial job in a gym, because his fight career seems over..."I gotta be around it"

Mike? He marries Sue, and works at Claudio's garage, waiting for a down and out vocalist to be rescued from the clutches of rib fests and county fairs

    CANNOT WAIT for this book!

    October!

The Kiss book, Nothin to lose, was an absolute classic.
Ever stone turned from the early days.

    Rising should be similar.

NO absolutely not. Wherever you read that is 100% incorrect.

Keep in mind there's more to the Bill Aucoin not signing them story.....

Paul and Bill didn't appreciate Gene spending time on other artists.....so they pretty much put the kybosh on signing VH before Bill even met them.

I can't believe Bill Aucoin would be foolish enough to pass on VH.

First off, you have this freak of nature guitar player in 1978.
Second, and most importantly, you have the tunes!

Unlike their rivals Quiet Riot, Van Halen had incredible songs, right out of the gate.

The only thing i can think of is the musical landscape at the time:
Disco, Sean Cassidy, Olivia Newton John, Grease...

Hard rock was considered dead & buried by some, at that point.

I just cannot fathom Bill passing on something like that, unless he was convinced
there'd be no future market for it.
