Default Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. AX4

I guess these are the middle-of-the-line guitars of this series. Has the AX40's Floyd-like bridge. I like this blue one.

    These are interesting...
The guitars look great, for those of us who dig the EBMM vibe, but I'm wondering how they feel and sound.

I'll check one out if given the chance. The tone knob and 5 way selector switch really increase the guitar's appeal.

I've played a few of them. I'm actually impressed. And they come set up from the factory far better than the Wolfgang Standards have been (or GC has been screwing around with the Wolfgang Standards setup way too much).

They're pretty nice, based on the ones I've played, although the action is a little higher than I like straight from the factory.

I just picked one up yesterday, it plays and feels very much like my EVH music man! When I got home from work yesterday, I received a flyer from guitar center with the AX4 on the back on sale for $229.00, 15 minutes later I was at GC buying a red one! The set up was great, these are great players for very little money!

I owned a Sterling AX40 for a while, and threw a set of Wolfgang pickups in it. I've had an opportunity to play the SUB version of the AX40, and I did not notice any real differences in playability between the AX40 and the SUB version. As I understand it, the biggest difference is the country of origin, and the top is a photo-flame, vs. the real maple veneer used on the AX40. Not a huge deal, since neither really contribute to the tone of the guitar in any way. I don't know what they are using for pickups in the SUB version. The original AX40 (before the "D" version where they are using the "same as" the Axis pickups) were voiced to sound like the Axis in the AX40. They could be the same pickups as the original AX40, but are likely made more cheaply elsewhere. The bridge appears to be the same as the AX40, but looks can be deceiving. The Floyd that comes on the Wolfgang Standard looks like the one on the Specials and U.S. Wolfgangs, but it's not. The Wolf Standard has the equivalent of a Floyd Rose Special (zinc tone block and saddles), where the U.S. and Specials have the equivalent of a FR-1000 (made to the same specs with the same materials as the OFR, only produced in Korea). The Sub series may be using the same bridge as the AX40, or it may be more like the Floyd Rose Special/FR-1000 thing.

Either way, the bones of the guitar are there. If the neck plays right, and the body resonates well, everything else can be upgraded. I've thought about picking one up, and throwing a Wolfgang Humbucker in the bridge, upgrading the Floyd and putting a striped paintjob on it.

    That's very good to know!

I've been a fan of the AX40 guitars, and have owned a few of them. They are great axes for $$$ and like it's been noted, they are easy to upgrade if needed.
Keep looking for this newer line to appear with my regular seller, but haven't seen it yet.

I REALLY like that blue!! I've often thought about picking up an AX40D instead of another VH guitar. I can't believe how reasonably priced they are! I'm guessing these don't have the Dimarzio's though.

You're right, the blue looks great!
None of mine were the "D" models with the Dimarzio Axis pickups. They still sounded great though - all of them. Getting VH tones was a breeze. Full on distortion is wicked, and harmonics jump right out. Even rolling off the volume responded very well.

I have a line on a gorgeous amber quilt AX40D right now. Bouncing back and forth with picking it up.

I now own the blue one. These do not have the Axis pickups, but the sound is still killer. The bridge is from the AX40. I really like the way it plays, feels, sounds, etc., so I have no complaints, especially considering the price.

Where did you buy yours from, and for what cost?
I've been looking for these models on eBay but haven't seen one yet...

Got mine from MF. Our local GC doesn't get the widest variety & I had the $$ in PayPal, so thought why not. Now I'm really glad I did.

I would make a video, but have been dealing with water in my ears since right after this arrived, so I can't be a judge of sound right now. I did have it sounding pretty sweet trough my Line 6 Amplifi, as well as S-Gear software, though.
