Default Backstage Fender combo on VH Unleashed??

Does anyone know what kind of Fender amp Ed was using in the dressing room in the MTV Unleashed special?

It looks like either a Twin or a Deluxe, possibly a Vibrolux reverb. He has some great natural overdrive going on there. I'm in the market for a Fender combo and was curious as to what this amp was. I'm betting it's a blackface deluxe.

I remember in early, early interviews he always praised his Fender
practice amp, said it had the best tone he'd ever heard (at least to that point).
You'd see it in pictures, backstage, in those old Zlozower classic shots.

    Was it a bandmaster?

I can't recall, to be honest.

There's a thread over on VintageKramer about this...

    http://www.kramerforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63007

Nothing definitive there, but he had that same rig for several tours it seems.

Actually it looks like a couple of people in that thread, including myself determined it looks like a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Though I'd say it's likely well-modified

Not sure about it being modified. I just read somewhere that he would plug into the external speaker jack, or run the speaker into that input instead of wired directly. . . or something like that. It'd eat up the output transformer, but yielded some great tone for awhile.

It really did sound pretty great in that backstage footage.

Not sure about the amp in question, but I do like how it sounded in that clip!
Off topic (but still related) , I saw a clip of Yngwie playing through a very small solid state Marshall, and he sounded virtually the same as his massive tube stacks!

The attack was there, as were the stylistic traits. Same as the EVH tone on 'Unleashed', IMO.
We all put so much emphasis on gear, yet it truly does seem to be mostly "all in the hands" with many of the greats...

I saw Yngwie warm up in a little pit off to the side of a stage in a large bar venue long ago. I think he was also using a small Marshall practice amp. Don't remember its tone, but I do remember standing about 4' from him and thinking, "I will NEVER be able to do that."

Always liked the tone of that Fender in the backstage clip. A Deluxe Reverb has been on my will-buy list for a while, but I don't expect to get that kind of tone out of it. Strangely enough, I think I can get close to that tone with my Roland Cubes.

His practice amp you're referring to was a Bandmaster head - he mentions it in his Guitar Aficionado interview. Since it was a head though, I guess the one he's using in that MTV Unleashed video is something else. I have no idea what!

I have a Roland Cube 10 practice amp . The thing is amazing for it's small size! Lots of good tones packed in there.

Love the stack setting (Marshall) for most of my playing, with the gain dimed and the tone set to midway. Early VH for days, and it can handle lots of the later stuff as well. I'm currently using it on the JC clean setting, with an MXR Super Badass distortion fueled rig, but still love the sound I mentioned above. Cool modelling tone IMO. Been trying to find a good deal on a bigger model (60 watts) to actually jam with, and have the external speaker out option for a 2x12 cabinet...

The pics on Kramer forums looks like a Deluxe Reverb. The pics that JapeApe posted look like it could be a Princeton, the kind like the original Boogie amps were based off of. If you are not up on Mesa/Boogie history, Randall Smith started out modding Fender Princeton amps, and adding a "Boogie" panel to the grille cloth. He came up with the Boogie name, because when Carlos Santana played through one of the modded Princeton amps, he said, "Man, this thing really boogies."

So, before Mesa was Mesa, the first Boogie amps were modded Fender Princetons. Anyhow, the smaller amp in JapeApe's post looks like a Princeton to me.
