    Default 5150

So I listened to 5150 from start to finish yesterday; had completely forgotten what a GREAT album that was. However, it (and OU812) are let down by poor production....usually iTunes has their 'enhanced' version - but they don't on either of these albums.

Any insights on if there is remastered / improved versions out there (beyond the stuff that is on BOBW)?

I have the Japanese remasters for both of those albums. They aren't quite up to current day remaster quality but a significant improvement nonetheless.

the hagar era material was remastered and released in Japan. 5150 and OU812 are both available to listen to on youtube and both sound a lot better.

I've had OU812 in my car for about a year, I listen to it from time to time (I have a cd player but not a jack to my IPOD and I don't really listen to music on the radio all that much) and in my car it doesn't sound that bad, it's not great but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. The only thing that hurts 5150 is the electric drums, if you can get past that it's not that bad either.

I'm not saying they're great and they would be 100 times better if they had the sonic quality of FUCK or Balance but I'm not gonna throw the baby out with the bath water over the production. There's some great material on those 2 records.

I'm listening to the Youtube link for 5150. Wow this sounds way better! I've been listening to the original one in my car and this youtube version has alot more punch and sounds clearer.

I thought people said the Japanese version was not technically remastered back in 2005. Just a different type of production used over there? Anyone remember? Something like the Japanese version is just 6db louder and thats it.

To my ears this sounds remastered to me...

    Agreed! Thanks all.

Where can I order from? And are they clearly marked as 'remastered' / or as improved in some way? I don't want to spend $$ on something that is what I already have. I checked Google - and a bunch of stuff came up as out of print

Honestly, I'm shocked that iTunes doesn't have the 'newer' stuff available.

I'm with you man! What a difference....I have to believe that something happened during pressing or whatever because the original doesnt sound nearly this good. OU812 brings back the summer of my 19th year...good times except this album sounds so bad I find it hard to listen to now. But this makes my day...thanks for the links!!

Haven't listened to OU812 in awhile.

You're looking for the 2005 Japan Forever Young releases. The catalog numbers are:

    5150 - WPCR-75068 (ISBN 4943674057801)

    OU812 - WPCR-75069 (ISBN 4943674057818)

    Unlawful - WPCR-75070

Balance (has Crossing Over) - WPCR-75071

    VH3 - WPCR-75072

I got mine from http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/, but they appear to be no longer available.

    5150 = http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/WPCR-75068

    OU812 = http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/WPCR-75069

There's also folks selling them on eBay and Amazon, but you should definitely confirm with the seller that they are actually selling the 2005 Japan editions with the above catalog numbers before ordering, as many sellers don't list their items right.

original 5150 album mix has way too much treble and not enough bass or 'middle', in my opinion. this may have been a conscious decision, but it's not pleasant on the ears despite the great songs. the electronic drums add to the hurt, and there seems to be a constant piercing hiss in the background on most tracks from AL going mental on the cymbals. but it's still a great album despite this. ed's guitar is a bit too 'buzzy' and not 'chunky' enough too. the jap remaster sounds a lot bassier and better to me...

I still (and always will) think that 5150 is a great album. Lots of fun on there, as well as some musical genius
The band hit a grand slam homer with that release
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

Al really went cymbal crazy on OU812. One of the reasons I really don't like a lot of that disc. I find 5150 to be a great album. Outside of "Get Up" and "Love Walks In" I like or love every song on there.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

There is a lot of cymbal on OU812, now that it's mentioned.
I don't mind the "splash," though.

There is one really cool moment at the very end of AFU, when Eddie
does that almost classic style cadenza, then abruptly dumps the bar, raising
    it back up.

I love the sound of that thing.

Kinda ratty, but still with tone.
