Default Funny How Times Change : VH vs U2

In 1983-4 Van Halen was the headliner at the US festival. U2 was a small band put on stage during the day. Fast forward now 30 years... this summer Van Halen can't sell out one show here in Chicago after weeks and weeks and U2 is on their way to selling out 4 shows and just added a 5th show for sale. What do you think has caused this?
    Van Halen dysfunction after 1996?
Two great guitarists, Bono is iconic, Dave was iconic?

    U2 is a global band.

    VH is not.

A think a number of things go into it. One, U2 has never had the extended absence like VH had between VH III and ADKOT. While it does not matter for the hard core fans, for the average folks out there it is out of sight out of mind. It also makes it easier for U2 to attract fans for the younger generation. Two, U2 has pretty much had a stable lineup throughout, while VH changed lead singers multiple times. It is hard to catch lighting in a bottle once. VH was lucky that it was able to do it twice - DLR to begin with and then Hagar. Once the band imploded a second time, it never really seemed to recover - though I did like VHIII - and has muddle through a number of reunions and then an album filled with demos from 30 years ago. Call me a hater, but if you want to remain relevant and not a nostalgia act you can't rely upon old material. Three, you have a situation where if you go to a VH concert you really only get part of their greatest hits, as DLR won't sing Hagar stuff and Hagar only sings some of DLR's stuff. Four, U2 has paid a ton of dues touring the world, VH not as much - at least not within the last 20 years. Five, while I might get some grief for this, imo U2 will deliver a great show, while all indications are that the instrumental portions of VH will be sharp, but DLR is a shell of what he used to be. Don't get me wrong, I much prefer VH over U2, but the above is why I think U2 seems to doing better.

Can't blame a man for stating the facts. ('',)b

My only point of disagreement was that ADKOT was better album (imho) than the last two U2 albums... other than that, spot on as to why U2 has risen to such heights as the biggest band currently on earth.

The biggest factor that is impacting the VH is cancelled dates from the last 2 tours. Casual fans will be leery about buying tix since shows were canceled on previous tours due to the band "biting off more than they could chew."

Two great guitarists? The Edge ranks high because is band is ranked high.

He has a very distinctive sound, and has co-written some fantastic tunes.

At the same time, I don't see anyone sportin' U2 merch, if that counts for anything. Never seen a bumper sticker, t-shirt or anything. It isn't that hard to run into someone with something VH.

Van Halen's first Album was in 78'. U2's was in 79'.
U2 had it's hard core followers up until "The Joshua Tree". I was 17 and got a free ticket to that concert and bought a pirate t-shirt in the parking lot. (it was cheap crap too, but I wore it cause I thought The Joshua Tree album was cool). So I was in Montgomery Ward's one day shopping and the cashier was a U2 hardcore fan and she said something to the affect of "Now everyone is into U2"
That album was cool, different, I was a teenager etc etc. But after that album they got into weird techno and I have never listened to them since, but I believe that was a global move. They shifted away from rock and went into weird off the wall stuff. Van Halen is just rock, and the rest of the world went tecno/hip hop/rap whatever.
That makes me think now that rock was around for 30 years and in the late 80's was very stale and repetitive and eventually became a joke. Rap/hip hop has been mainstream for 30+ years now..................what is on the horizon for it? I still hear people listening to it all over the place..............what gives?

Yeah their last really good album was Joshua Tree. Everything since has been largely crap, which is probably why they're so popular lol.

Shit. The last good U2 album was achtung baby. That album is straight up tits.

The lack of production and the lack of pr has killed VH. it's sad but Dave, Gary, Sammy , Dave again. It gets hard after a while to keep up for the casual fan.

I always had a love/hate view of Achtung Baby. Half the songs were real good, the other half forgettable throwaways.

U2 have had continuity, VH haven't. I personally don't like U2, I find them incredibly boring and think they're massively overrated.

Not to mention Bono's pretentiousness. So annoying.

    IMO

U2 only have 2 records I have any strong interest in... War and The Unforgettable Fire... They are both masterpieces.... Everything else to me, is so BORING

VH has had 11 incredible records..

    VH WINS.
