    Default Crossing Over

I really like this song lately.

I would love to hear Van Halen redo it like they redid some of their other demos. Since I don't think Sammy is ever coming back, I still think it would be interesting to hear Dave's take on it.

I would change the tempo slightly. I'd speed it up a bit. I also think the backing vocals are a little sloppy and all over the place.

Kind of a neat little thing.

That version is a remake of the original--Eddie recorded it with the original panned right and the new track panned left or maybe I have it backwards. If I remember correctly, Dave was in VH at the time of the original.

That's the first I've heard of that. Crossing Over from the Japanese version of Balance is a remake of an earlier tune??

Just heard it in the car today on the way home from work. There is definitely some major right/left shit going on there. Stands out more in the car then on the home stereo. Never knew it was a demo though. Always thought it was finished but to weird for release.

    A true treasure.

"Crossing Over" began as a demo titled "David's Tune" that Eddie wrote and recorded in 1983 for a friend who had committed suicide. Upon joining the band and hearing the demo, Sammy wanted to finish the song, but Ed declined. Years later, following the death of Ed Leffler and Sammy's father in 1993, Sammy wrote lyrics to further explore the theme of crossing over from one life into the next. Eddie finally gave his OK, and "Crossing Over" was finished. Still, some of the band felt the song was too personal, so it was kept off the album and appeared destined to become the only finished Van Halen outtake ever. Instead, the group was convinced to use the song as Van Halen's first-ever, non-album B-side.

Deep- haunting song. It's so unique sounding

Should have been on the US version of Balance, but at least it was released.

Besides some panning, what effect is Ed using for the tapped harmonics in the intro?
Sounds like a tremolo to me.

I've putzed around with that song a bit - the intro and chords with octave melody riffs. Another 'dropped-d' beauty.

Crossing Over is one of my favorite Van Halen songs because of the dark and personal nature of the song. It is a total contrast to many of the ballad driven songs that I really enjoy. There is no other song like this in the Van Halen catalog of which I am aware.

When I played CDs in the car, Crossing Over was an all-time car favorite. I swear parts of the song not only faded side to side, but front to back as well. I don't know if that's even possible.

Anyone besides me ever wonder why they didn't just DO that to begin with? I mean, I get having multiple versions of stuff (and trust me, I spent a lot of money as a younger dude on the blue and gold tins, the "1 child instead of 2" cover of Balance, and all the imports,) but I really never understood why they didn't release the "full" versions to the USA, and gave "additional things" to Japan, or some other country....
