Default Jan VH Takes His Sons Instrument Shopping, 1969

    http://vanhalenrising.tumblr.com/pos...ument-shopping

JAN VAN HALEN takes his sons instrument shopping, 1969.

A thought experiment for readers of this blog: if you headed a household that struggled to make ends meet, would you borrow and spend an inordinate amount of money to support your children’s dreams?

    By @GregRenoff

If your name is Jan Van Halen and the year is 1969, the answer is yes.

As will be fully detailed in Van Halen Rising, by the late 1960s Alex and Edward Van Halen had developed a passion for blues-rock. They’d started a group of their own, The Trojan Rubber Company, and had begun gigging around Pasadena.

Even though Jan Van Halen (who was a talented jazz musician) didn’t share Alex and Edward’s musical tastes, he nurtured and embraced his sons’ love for music. That August, – coincidentally, on the same day that the Woodstock Festival got underway – he made a sizable investment in his sons’ passions by purchasing Edward a new guitar and Alex a new drum set.

He did so, it turns out, at no small cost to himself and his family.

In one of those VH books , it was written that Jan would get a deal on a guitar price , after the store owner was so impressed by young Edward's talent as a kid .

I believe it was in the 'Everybody Wants Some' hardcover book .

"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.

400 bucks was some serious coin back in 1969...let's see...should we buy a good go to work car, or should we buy Eddie a new guitar? That was a family sacrifice for sure

and 18 percent interest in 1969! Holy cow! "Music for Everyone" who wants to pay out of the nose!

by then they would have been teenagers, so the old man knew what talent they had in them by then...still, a huge leap of faith.

Jan Van Halen was a good man. Bringing his family to USA for a better life, doing menial jobs to support his wife and kids. Giving big props to JVH!!

That is one expensive guitar. Certainly he didn't need one that good for his kids but he got it anyway. Maybe he should have gone on craigslist.

$400 in 1969 was worth $2645.76 in 2015 money. That seems about right. The drums were only half that. So Pops shelled out around $4200 for the boys in today's money. Do you think Wolfgang even understands any of this?

Yes I'm sure Wolfgang understands the value of money. He's 24 years old not a child.

What makes u think he has a good understanding solely due to his age? (how many 24+ still have no financial sense)

I think it would be very difficult for him (or anyone else in remotely similar situation) to truly grasp the value of money. Not his fault, that's the life he was born into.

He has only known a life of ultimate privilege (financially speaking) so experiencing or truly knowing a life of financial struggle, as Jan did is foreign to him. Again not a knock, Im sure many on this site had a fortunate upbringing too me. Myself included. So while I "know" the value theoretically, I never had to live like my grandparents who immigrated here like the Van Halens. That has to make a huge difference.

I was shocked to see $400 for a guitar but As others have said though, great investment Mr. Van halen! I'm sure it got much more than it's worth in terms of time spent playing.
