    Steinberger Bass??

My buddy Bob, who plays bass just stopped by and showed my his new kick ass Steinberger (?) bass. It's black and I think he said the body is maple?? and the neck is some kind of composite material. Wish I would have taken a picture of it. I don't even play any instruments and I was blown away at the weight and feel of the thing.

Anyway, he asked me to find pictures of Mike with a Steinberger if they are out there. Sadly, I have no idea what kind of bass Mike even plays.

Anybody want to help a guy out with Bobs request and post some pics... if they even exist? Bob doesn't even use the internet... God bless him... Mr. Propulsion.

Don't believe I've ever seen MA play a Steinberger. EVH yes, but the closest MA ever came was the JD and Tobasco basses which are headless but not made by Steinberger. BTW, if your friend's Steinberger is early to mid 80's it's worth thousands. If not, than it is probably a Steinberger licensed bass and worth significantly less.

Your mate might be thinking of this picture of Ed playing one...

If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

Hi, actually I believe Mike did play one on a track or two of 1984. I'll need to check for sure. He actually got the bass in a trade for a Spector Bass with Scott Smith from Loverboy.

My brother was a GM at Steinberger in the 80s. If MA had one, he didn't buy it direct. Jeff Babicz built Eddie's Steinberger.

Wow! That's cool man! I know a lot of people rag on Steinies, but I've always had a place in my heart for them. I've played some from time to time, and there's just something about them. So light, they almost feel toylike, but on the other hand, they had monster sound, and had great playability.
Very innovative, and what else can be said about the TransTrem? So cool...I swear had business affairs been different, that bridge, (or at least a revised version that could fit conventional guitars better) would have definitely been right along side the Floyd in popularity. They have that ZT3 TransTrem 3, but I don't think it's remotely on par with the originals, or even the Zen On models for that matter.

As far as Mike and Steinberger..I never recall him mentioning playing one. I'm sure he had at least one or two over the years, and I do remember, as D_Sobo mentioned him saying he traded one for a Spector at one point.
I've never seen a pic anywhere. Who knows? He may have actually tracked with one!

I remember Mike mentioned trading a Spector for a Steinberger with Loverboys bassist Scott Smith in this 1995 Bass Frontiers interview.

Unfortunately Scott Smith passed away many years ago in a sailing accident. ( R.I.P. )

Loverboy toured with VH opening some of the 1986 shows..... so if Mike recorded with a Steinberger on the 1984 album it must've been a different one than the one he got from Scott Smith. Maybe he used that one of the other albums after 1986. ( ??? )

Here's the link to the interview. It's a really good read for those who might not have read it already. A lot of territory is covered. He also mentions one of the tunes they were working on when Dave split was Sucker In a Three Piece Suit. There's a PDF download link on this page with the full magazine scans and pictures.

.... " I played Spectors and I really liked those basses. I bought one of the first basses he ever made and I used it on the 5150 tour. Loverboy was on the tour with us and their bassist always used Spectors and I think I traded my Spector to him for a Steinberger. (Laughs.) I traded off some great basses! I don't why I ever did. ".....

Neil Zlozower did a photo shoot featuring some of Mikes bass collection in 2012 but there's no Steinberger shown.
