Default What is your favorite mid concert jam?

Doesn't have to be spontaneous, I get that a lot these things are planned ahead of time.

So what's your favorite Van Halen moment where they start playing a song seemingly impromptu or just out of what is expected? Usually not a song of their own.

I'll post my favorite after a few responses.

I like the one's during the VHII tour, where you'd get bits & pieces of stuff that would show up
    on WACF.

Hmm...this tough. Like japeape said, how they snuck in bits and pieces of things that eventually became songs was cool. The II tour is no exception.

I don't know, I guess it could change tomorrow but I really like what they did with "On Fire" on the '81 tour. Opening with the chords and then doing that improv jam in the beginning, before they kicked into it fully.....AWESOME!!

Hide your sheep tour. Jamming Girl Gone Bad and other little impromptu tid bits in the middle of Somebody Get Me A Doctor. A bit of planned spontaneity.

Honorable mention; 1991 Providence. I could not tell what they were playing. Some kind of jam that I thought would be Everbody Wants Some! was my best guess. Eventually became Pleasuredome. Whole band did at least a verse and chorus before moving on. That was cool too.

The Ed/Al duel in the middle of SGMAD, Montevideo, Uruguay Feb 5, 1983. Incredible jam that went way beyond just doing GGB and I'm So Glad. During the "duel" Ed pulled off some sounds that were wicked even for him.

It's moments like these where it's absurd that people would even entertain the notion that Ed would ever continue Van Halen without Alex.

1980 WACF tour - 30-second intro to RWTD. They also jammed a lot around Jimmy Reed's "Bright Lights, Big City" on that tour. Also liked (at the time) the BOBW/"Addicted To Love" part during the 5150 tour.

Always loved that intro to RWTD.

Also, the extended intro to YRGM opening night of the second world tour in Fresno.

The jam in the middle of FYLT on the 79 tour was really cool

Also Romeo Delight Phoenix 81 had a cool jam

EWS from the the 84 Oh Canada boot had a really cool jam instead of the jokes that Roth usually told during the middle

yeah still cool to hear all the little jams in 1979...that showed up on WACF. Fools intro, Romeo Delight middle, Dave does a little "CTBM" acoustic melody before ICM sometimes. Dave had a little line about "Everybody Wants Some...well I want some too"... -- probably more I'm forgetting

1982/83 GGB into I'm So Glad is up there.

At the March 1 2012 Madison Square Garden show when they played The Full Bug. I was at a bar with a friend of mine before the show and that was the one song he was hoping they would play. I remember saying something along the lines of "yeah right, that won't happen" and low and behold they did. It was a very memorable time for me.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

Great thread topic - I've gone back and listened to a lot of these today (working from home).

The first Japan show in 2013, in Nagoya I think, they did a cool breakdown in EWS that was longer than most of the breakdowns they did in that song on the ADKOT tour.

Heartbreak Hotel/Ice Cream Man in Montevideo, Uruguay is an awesome one.

The Pleasure Dome jam before Al's solo on the FUCK tour was always cool. One of my favorite songs, musically, from that era.

The SGMAD jams in Caracas, Venezuela January 16, 1983 and Montreal October 27(?), 1982 as well as the US Fest one are all classic Ed/Al duels.

This thread is making me want to bust out a bunch of these old bootlegs.
