Default Source of Infection vs Outta Space

Two cool songs with underrated lyrics. Both up beat rockers. Listen for yourself. What do you think?

Sammy is saying VH has some vocal problems. Source has some of Sammy's typical hey's and wooo's. Both are good though. 30 years later or whatever. It's all VH to me. Both guys can sing when they want to. Some good Michael Anthony harmonies in Source of Infection.

I'm kind of on a comparison kick because critiquing is always fun. I don't see a huge difference honestly in quality. OU812 always had an underrated sound to it imo as well. Eddie's guitar sound and the drums Alex was using. I think he messed around with Electic at that time. It was a departure and different from classic stuff like Fair Warning and even 1984 but had a really unique sound. Sammy fit that perfectly as well.

VH may not have the hits they used to but the quality of music is still there.

Comparisons like this are always weird to me. These are two very different songs from two very different eras. Both suffer from unique sets of production woes. If I had to give the edge to one of them it'd be Outta Space because of the flat production and Sam's phoned in take on SOI.

Wouldn't say Source of Infection has underrated lyrics...in fact it's right on par with Up for Breakfast, if not worse.

Yeah I know it was a weird comparison why I picked it. They are different but similar in weird ways.

I like both songs but I'm unclear on what comparison you trying to make. I know that SOI gets some flack from people but have people been slagging Outta Space?

More just making the comparison from a technical quality level. Both are later in the album rockers that weren't necessarily big hits. Both have similar structure as well when the solo comes in and how it is structured etc.. I think quality wise they are about equal and it's really up to preference which song you like better. outta space is not even 3 minutes long. It's about as straightforward rock song VH can do. Source of infection is a little longer and breaths more mainly because of the intro but is about the same thing.

Both songs towards the end give me that sensation of swirling repetitiveness and lyrics. Even though they are both short songs. But the ending of both songs they do the same things in ways. Whether it's Sammy saying Love is a source of infection or Dave repeating the same lyrics. Both songs would have fit on the twister soundtrack because the band sounds like they are in one in both songs.

I don't think either is Van Halen's best work but both are good underrated songs if you just let them play. They are both about as bland and straightward album filler imo but decent songs. Eddie can just play and good stuff comes out. That's what both songs are to me. They don't seem like they took much thought. Both have that upbeat kick you in the face vibe to them.

"Source of Infection" is one of my favorite songs from "OU812" and "Outta Space" is one of my favorite songs from "ADKOT". Both tunes have killer music with "marginal" lyrics.

I love the intro to Source of Infection. I still think he should include it in his solo spot live.

when I first heard SOI I thought that the band was jamming and Sam just walked in and sang stuff off the top of his head and they kept it cause it had a decent melody to it in spots and they were running late with OU812 (the MOR tour was already set up before they finished OU812). I still think that's kind of what happened with that song.

it's more Ed just playing his ass off than anything else-Mike and Al are great on it as well but I wouldn't put it up there as a song that highlights what Sam was capable of in terms of songwriting.

I always liked it for what it was.

I like stuff about outta space, I just really, really like lets get rockin' so it's hard for me to separate the 2.

I never thought about comparing them.

this thread will end up as sam vs dave, even if the discussion is civil someone will chime in about how much better this song would have been had this guy sang on it and then it will be blown wide open.
