    Default Turning a Kramer "The '84" into a 5150.

So I bought one of the new Kramer re-issues in white and have sanded the gloss finish down. Also got some Hyper-Formance Sunset Orange and Dupli-Color white and black paint. The weather's warming up and I'm preparing to tape for the red, but had a couple questions about that first.

    1. The painted "V" shape on the back of the neck appears to come up to the beginning of the nut on the bottom side of the headstock. Does it go to the same spot on the top side? I'm assuming it does, but can't find a pic from that angle to confirm.

    2. Also, are the tape sizes correct in these images? I have every size but can't find 3/16" anywhere.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I couldn't find any tape smaller than 1/2", I just used an x-acto and a metal ruler to cut it thinner. the only place I looked was Home Depot, though.

Yep. I had to cut my own too. I found some much later at an auto paint supply place online. Forget the name but remember it was definitely 3M tape. So I know it exists. Or did. I've been planning this same thing for years. Money, time, and right guitar haven't lined up for me yet. Good luck and post pics!

I made those stripe guides probably 10 years ago. I'll be honest, I never got a chance to use them, but I believe many others have with good results.

Are you going to route the pickup cavity to the correct shape?

I seem to remember seeing a pic of what you're looking for , regarding the nut .
Yes - I believe the painted 'V' on the back of the neck goes to the top of the nut in the same way .

    I'll try to find a photo .

In the future, just go to any auto store that sells finishing supplies. Tell 'em what sizes you need, and they'll set you up with primo quality pinstriping masking tape.
No bleeds with that stuff either.

Thanks. Even just knowing that it does is helpful.

We checked a couple home improvement stores and auto parts stores to no avail for the 3/16". I thought I found it online at Amazon, but turns out it was mislabeled and they sent 1" instead and claimed to not carry 3/16". We can just make it ourselves out of what we have if need be, just wondered if maybe those guides weren't correct for that size.

Thanks for that btw, I'll be using your guides combined with a projected image for some of the work. And yep, we just routed it recently.

The guitar came with that JB. I'd probably put it back in if it wasn't a zebra, but since it is, I'll probably order a Custom Custom instead.

I remember when I did my 5150, I had a hell of a time finding 3/16" tape. I email just about every supplier in Australia and couldn't find any. I eventually found it here... He's in the US.

I also used that guide for mine and it worked out well.

    Good luck with it.
If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

I think it will come out great, but if you are really trying to make it as accurate as possible you'll need to re-shape the headstock too. Also the rout for the control cavity is different on the real 5150. The body shape is also slightly different. Actually you can get much more accurate bodies and necks in basswood or ash which are closer to the real thing from Musikraft or KNE for less than what one would generally pay for an "84 Kramer reissue" from Gibson.

Perhaps. I did the math, but considering this is my first attempt at a replica and i'd be learning as I go, I preferred to keep it simple and start with a completed guitar. Any differences appeared slight enough to me that I don't think it will ruin the end result. Well see though I guess. Here's a side by side.

How bizarre is it that I didn't even notice that The Kramer trem spring cover is recessed and the 5150 isn't until you pointed it out. I had to go look to figure out what you meant.

Just goes to show you that no matter how long you stare at these things you can still miss details. Anyway, it's the back and I'll just stripe it as normal so the recess should essentially be camouflaged by the stripes.
