Tour is not selling well - and that's being generous

Before anyone accuses me of trying to "slam" the band, let me preface my comments by saying that I've purchased my tickets for the tour (VIP package in Birmingham), and I've purchased the new live album twice. I own multiple copies of everything they've ever recorded. I've been to more VH concerts than I can count. I even invited Ed to my wedding (he didn't make it). I am a HUGE Van Halen fan.

But, I'm also a realistic Van Halen fan. My concern with the Kimmel/Ellen appearances was that they (the appearances) might backfire on the band in the form of lost ticket sales. In other words, the "casual fan" who might have been interested in going to see Van Halen would now say "no, thanks" after seeing those less-than-stellar performances (for the record, my take is that the music was top-notch, but I was disappointed with Dave). The immediate reaction on social media seemed to confirm my concern. But the real test, I think, is actual ticket sales.

Ticketmaster/LiveNation now lets you use a seating map/chart to pick your specific seats for most venues. Thanks to this map, you can also see how many seats are still available in each venue. Keep in mind that tickets went on sale over a week and a half ago. I randomly pulled 3 venues (Birmingham, Charlotte and Phoenix), and in all 3, well more than half of the seats are still available (the blue dots represent available seats). I have attached screen shots of those three venues as of this evening (Tuesday, April 14th).

I'm looking forward to a phenomenal concert in Birmingham. But I have to admit that I'm also concerned that we'll have a repeat of 2012 (shows being cancelled) if ticket sales don't pick up.

It will sell better as shows start getting closer. Last time out after ADKOT was released, the tour started pretty quickly after tix went on sale.

Good. Tour tanks. They bring Mike back. Dave's plan is working perfectly.

I hate to break it to everyone.

They aren't going to sell out these shows, and I would believe that they would know that going in. These venues are bigger than their two prior reunion tours.

In 2008 and 2012 they played the Verizon Center in my area, and I don't think they sold out either one, though they were good crowds, it looked full.

This year they are playing Jiffy Lube which is over 25% more capacity, and lets face it, it's third time around, the newness of VH back with DLR has worn off. They are probably going to average 12-13K per show, which is probably on par to what they did on the last tour.

But, these venues are bigger, if there is only 12,000 at Jiffy Lube, the place will look like a tomb.

That's silly. Dave was singing like this on the last tour. Everyone knows the deal. This aint nothing new. This is the third time around with higher ticket prices and every popular band in the world on tour. Of course it was going to be harder to sell.

I agree with you that they will not sell out most of these shows. For the mere fact that most seats are in the lawn section. They're not selling 10,000+ lawn tickets.

I don't know about the "larger venues", though. Amphitheaters are generally smaller than basketball arenas. In most cities, anyway.

And I think of VH as being semi-retired anyways. If they never tour again I'll be able to say I had an amazing seat on their final tour.

I think attendance will be similar to the Cherone tour.

Youre right, amphitheaters are smaller than arenas. People, it's too early to sound the alarm. The tour doesn't start until July and it's only April for crying out loud.

Wait until June before you start to panic.

I don't know how the tour is selling in my area right now. I know that there are a few shows that have been announced that are being talked about a lot on the local radio stations-AC/DC and the Stones.

they've mentioned VH a couple of times but that's it. VH always sells really well in my area. Both era's sold well, Sam solo sells well and I think Dave sold well for awhile (he fizzled out in 94 a bit)

it'll be interesting to see how they sell here, maybe I'll look into it later or if anyone is inclined they're playing DTE energy music theatre in Clarkston, MI

The pavilion parts are smaller, and they look smaller, but they will sell a shitload of lawn tickets if they can. If you look up the capacity of some of these outdoor venues, you'd be surprised, their capacity is usually more than what you could fit into a basketball arena.

Verizon Center where the Wizards and Caps play is a little over 18K for concerts, and Jiffy Lube is 25,000.
