    Default Unexpected....

So I have a Peavey USA Wolf special- very warm fat sounding guitar. I just got hold of an EVH wolf special hardtail in stealth black with ebony fretboard. WTF?- Ok it has an ebony board so more high end and brighter but the pickups (stock) seem very different to the Peavey (also stock)- more compressed or something with slightly LESS output and drive? The guitar seems resonant and the notes sustain acoustically but at volume with gain they seem to die out and feedback quickly but beautifully- in tune and you can physically feel the resonance through the guitar! It seems to have a similar effect to the Fernandes sustainer or something.
    Anyone else have similar thoughts?
I'm running it through 6505 stack with the settings Ed used.
Is this what you guys are experiencing with the EVH Wolfs?

Yup, the pickups are a little lower output, more refined. My EVH Special resonates more than any other guitar I own, I feel every vibration of that guitar via the neck, it's amazing.

I'll be honest though: while I think the EVH pickups are just better than the Peavey ones, that type of resonance is just luck of the draw. The right pieces of wood married together to make that one particular guitar. It's just odds.

For instance: I have two nearly identical Strats. They both sound good, but one is fatter, more resonant, and every time I play the 8th fret on the B string that note sustains into overtones beautifully. Just got lucky.

Either way: congrats on the new axe!

Thanks mate- I was just really surprised. I cant help thinking 'how did he get from here (Peavey) to here (Fender) they feel and sound totally different. Over the years as Ed developed his equipment you could kinda see a logical progression but this seems out of left field. Don't get me wrong- I love it. You can hear the ADKOT album all over it which I'm guessing doesn't have much (if any) harmoniser on it. The harmoniser seems to make this guitar muddy.
I won't have to buy picks for a while- I can just slide up and down the board and listen to the feedback

    ....a quick footnote:
I grabbed the guitar with the intention of getting it routed for the EVH Floyd as it was all I could get/ afford at the time but now Im wondering what will happen to the resonance? I don't want to end up with the shark guitar ie; take out wood near the bridge and stuff the sound.
    Any thoughts?

If you like it that much---don't chop it.
Just get another EVH with the FR.

100% agreed, if you're digging the guitar right now don't mod it. There might even be a difference in neck pocket angle between the hardtails and the floyds that could cause you some issues. Not sure about that, but it's a possibility.

Now you have an excuse to have two Wolfgangs.

Yeah I tend to agree- too risky.
So Jedi- do you think my wife will buy that? "I can't mess with this- we're gonna have to go without food for a while 'cause I need one with a trem"

Just tell her your friends on the internet told you that you have to do it. If it's on the internet it's true, and she can't fault you for that.

Ebony boards should sound darker, not brighter. Maple is the brightest fingerboard, to my knowledge.

I have no doubt that the total sum of the parts are "sonically" as you say they are, though. And that's great.

Nope, ebony is brighter than maple. It's denser.

    From http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Necks/NeckWoods.aspx . Look at the Tone-O-Meter.

    You're absolutely right!

I had it confused with Rosewood!

Almost the same thing here. I played my Peavey USA Wolfgang Special almost exclusively for over 10 years and, over the last year or so, have been playing my EVH Striped Series almost all the time. I just got one of the new EVH Wolfgang Specials and it's an entirely different guitar. I guess I expected it to be like the Striped Series with classier cosmetics, but everything is different. The extra pickup adds volume and depth, which might explain why there's less output and drive. The neck is beautiful and also has a slightly different kind of look and feel...both better, in my opinion. The guitar feels tighter, if that makes sense, and it has a much wider range of tones. And the tone knob actually works!

The only problem is that I'm going to need another "Mesa Month" to get my settings right. And I'm going to have to take pictures of the amp settings because they're different from the Striped to the Wolf. But they're both great guitars.

See... I'm funny... I have 12 different guitar that all sound different. I have my amp set up and pick a different guitars if I want a different sound.

I do that as well. But what amp are you using? Mesas seem to be a bit different, it takes a while to dial in a sound for each guitar.

I'm using the Mesa Boogie Express 5:25, with a Weber attenuator when playing in the house. It's a great amp and I'm very happy with the tone, but the dials are super sensitive...small changes can result in big changes in tone. It's a good problem to have! I play a lot of different music genres, but try to keep it within a certain sound, so I don't need 12 different guitars. The volume knob is usually enough for me!

From the perspective of the amp, there was a noticeable change in sound from the Striped to the Wolf without any changes in settings. If I set it to as close to the Striped as possible (bridge pickup, tone all the way in one direction), it was closer, but still noticeably warmer. Everything sounds great, it's just more of an adjustment than I expected. It gives me an excuse to experiment a little more!
